Well, I'm saying goodbye to CenturyTel today.
The service has always been great, but like many people, I just don't need a land line anymore. I talked about going with "dry DSL"...in fact I've been on it for a few weeks now. The problem is that it's just too expensive.
The 10000/768 service "dry" is $59.95 before taxes. Because you still have a line attached to the service, you end up paying all the typical taxes, which pushes the cost very close to $70.
RoadRunner offers 7000/512 service for $44.95. After taxes it's about $50.
To me, I can't justify the extra $20 for the extra speed.
CenturyTel has a great service with their DSL. I've been a customer for several years, and they've been great. It's just not a great deal if you don't need a phone.
Fortunately I've had RR in the past, and they're very good in my area.

I myself have explored other providers. Unfortunately for me my only choice is Charter, I won't bundle with them and the cost would be over double what I pay now.
I currently pay about $85 with taxes for my unlimited local/long distance and 10 meg internet through CT.

Good luck! This is making me think about going to the WISP in my area. I've never used them so I got cold feet when they were going to do the install on Monday lol. I guess I'm lucky in a sense with my dry DSL. I got put back on 1.5 and I got my bill today and it comes out to 38.28, still kinda expensive for 1.5 but I do feel your pain.

With a discount of $20 for 12 months, it brings it to 39.95/mo, plus tax only, so, about $45 at most total, not the normal taxes that come with a phone line, much less. The internet itself is not taxed, just the $1.25 internet access fee, which it shouldn't even hit $45 then. Good luck either way.

I wasn't offered the discount when I first called in to move to "dry" DSL. I sure wish I had been...it would have saved me the hassle of getting the cable modem installed.
If it's any consolation though, it was a tough decision to leave, even at the higher price (heck it was tough decision to cancel my phone service!). I've been with CTL for quite a while, and have been nothing but happy, so I am glad it all worked out. The rep I talked to on the phone today was excellent.
I know...I sound like a PR guy, but I really appreciate good service.

i recently signed up for Pure dry dsl. besides the monthly discount for the first year, there's a debit card included. give them a call and see if you can get the promo code for it.

I just posted a good revied on huges it was wrong. Huges is the worst I ever had. The post should have been for Centurytel, which had been great. They are the only one we can get where we live here in Oregon. Sorry abot giving Huges such a good rating. They dont even come close. 2 tin cans and a piece of string works better. |

Just as a follow-up, I dropped off my cable modem today and canceled my account. The guy asked what my reason was for canceling, and I told them that while RoadRunner works pretty well, CenturyTel DSL is faster, cheaper, and has been very reliable for me.
He didn't try to "save" me!
