to test another SpeedTouch after i moved;
that's all i can do as i'm afraid the end
of my old "Tweaks" thread is coming soon!

to conduct the kind of comparison tests i was hoping for;

a phone line at my new appartment and DSL service is now

We had another rain-free 24 hours today, i'll post a GNet
GBB2060-Xi curve tonight which shows that going FastPath

there are very busy days ahead. You can expect additional
posts related to my SpeedTouch vs SpeedStream comparisons
until i've definitely moved to Limoilou/Qc, whenever i can.

need some time (most likely weeks) to manage with Linux in
order to have a Linux CD that is able to monitor my MoDem
on a continuous basis, so that i can catch counter resets.

The last ST5x6 FirmWare is impressive if compared to all
others for sure, the SNR Margins from my SpeedTouch beat
those of three other devices but it doesn't tell me much
about disruptions (resets), unfortunately, and leaving the
'STMT' utility running all day long doesn't prevent sample
loss, as i may have mentioned previously - hence the need
to gather at least ninety-six samples every fifteen minutes
using a dedicated PC located in another room, preferably
one where i don't sleep...

(24 h) record from my SpeedStream 4200, finally. It
turns out i observed a limitation of the SS4200 when
combined to the 'DMT v9.01' 3rd-party tool instead.

I attached an animated .GIF to this message in order
to illustrate how the SpeedStream 4200 can happen to
loose a previous segment, sometimes. Well, it's not
dependant to the point one needs to run the utility
without interruption to obtain nice curves (like the
SpeedTouch if used with 'STMT') but i think present/
future SS4200 owners should be aware that their unit
can experience "amnesia" episodes... Take note i've
edited the captures to get a fixed time scale as it
is easier on the eye. I hope i didn't fail to keep
every other detail as these will help to understand
how and when the information has been lost exactly.

Right now there's just no negative remarks to make
relatively to the Siemens SpeedStream 4200 D242,
as far as i'm concerned. I intend to collect 24 h CRC
noise & spectral response curves for the next week
to come, so that marginal results can be minimized;
i hope the power failures or thunder storms will not
affect this test... At the moment, i only have 12 h
worth of record but i must say it's looking great!!!

As you may know, even "generic" SS4200 FirmWare
won't provide a complete set of statistic numbers for
'DMT v9.01' to display. Consequently, i had to fill my
capture with the figures i've published in this thread:

From GenTek (see my very 1st post here)...

It arrived neatly packed: the MoDem came in
its own genuine Siemens box which itself was
placed inside another sturdy paperboard box
with foamy fillers in between... The MoDem
and its box are both specifically marked as
being "D242" although the FirmWare is "D240"
(my initial correspondance with GenTek made
reference to the "D240" FirmWare version for
'DMT v9.01' compatibility so i suppose this
one was pre-installed for my convenience).

I'm about to post the RCO numbers i obtained
from VelCom earlier this morning, these sound
promissing when compared to anything i seen
before. Now this is the best of both worlds, it
generates 24 h "noise" curves on top of the
Spectral Response graphic. I start levitating!

Guess what: my D242 SpeedStream 4200 came with
D240 FirmWare pre-installed! That's quite a pleasant
surprize because now i know i won't have to search
for FirmWares since i already collected a few - not
that i plan to flash it but i simply feel better thinking

not have enough motivation to proceed with such an
acquisition before; everything went as smoothly as
i could have wished and i could even follow shipment
via Purolator's web site (in order to make sure there

optimistic: he tried many versions of HardWare/

The Aussie Siemens site doesn't have any FirmWare
for the D242 type so i guess i should wait to see
a 'DMT' capture with the right device information
before i can conclude it's safe to buy this one.

So, a more accurate statement to make about 'DMT'
versus the SpeedStream 4200 would be to say that
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't...

It doesn't make it simpler to need both the spectral
response and CRC Error curves in the 'DMT' captures!

string in "060-D242-GEN" is standing for "Generic".

I wouldn't mind a bit should i simply need to enable

Can't connect to modem to run DMT (on a 4200), HiVolt, 2007-Aug-12

Jeffrey Freedman from GenTek wrote me a note saying it's
79 $, TPS adds 4.45 $ to the cost and shipping brings the
grand total to 93.45 $. Does 'DMT v9.01' support the later
D242 FirmWare, that's the question! ...and i got one more...

Can any one of these upgrades fit on D242 SS4200 HardWare:

I already tried Thomson's SpeedTouch 546v6 ad nauseam, i
much prefer my GNet BB0060B and i believe i'll like my brand
new GNet GBB2060-Xi as well but this is the one i'm nost
curious to evaluate next.

I'm not sure if Gentek will sell them to an individual, you may have to be an ISP.
