To up date the driver, do we just run the .exe file, or does the current driver have to be uninstalled first?

(Obviously, I'm out of my element with this one )
Uninstall the graphics driver in ADD/REMOVE. Then go to "My computer">C>Nvidia and delete the Nvidia folder. Then boot into safe mode, and use driver sweeper found here.

Empty recycle bin.

Next, boot back to your desktop, and just for the heck of it, run your fave reg cleaner. Now install the new drivers.

Note: All previous settings will be lost following these instructions.
while i agree 100% for almost all critical drivers, nvidia is extremly tidy with their driver removal. the only thing driver sweeper/driver cleaner pro tend to remove is the C:\Nvidia folder.

ATI drivers are real messy, but nvidia's are nice and clean after Uninstalling via control panel.

just food for thought

I mostly agree Somnam but I have had a few instances where the Nvidia remove function didn't do so well. Funny but I bought Crysis and loaded it and got nothing but a black screen and froze when I executed the file. I noticed that even after uninstalling the previous driver, it was still there. Or maybe just remnants of it. I ran driver sweeper and behold, Crysis runs great.

One thing, do not delete the Nvidia folder. That will remove your ethernet and motherboard Nvidia drivers as well, if applicable.

I just used driver sweeper to install the latest 175.16 Nvidia drivers. The log showed some registry entries deleted during the cleaning. In my experience, Nvidia does a horrible job of removing it's own drivers. Weather you use add/remove programs, or do the un-install straight from device manager, the Nvidia folder is always left, and it is full of left over files. I also find that driver sweeper always has registry entries that it cleans out. This is why your settings will still be there after you update drivers, if all you do is use add/remove to nuke the old drivers.
