| Is Bell Obligated to Provide me Demarcation Outlet?
I currently have the following setup:

It's an ancient setup where my line demarc is a 66 push down block?
My DSL line constantly is syncing in and out. I'm connected to an RDSLAM and i'm eligible to get 5mbit. However, the wiring inside my house is messed up somehow that it severely hurts my stats (i believe my SNR is good, but the attenuation is horrible).
Had it been mandated by the CRTC that if I request to have a dermarc with an RJ-11 outlet that it be provided at no cost? If this is the case, i'll just split the line at demarcation point with filter.
Please advise. |

MacGyver, in your other thread you mentioned using a regular filter....does that mean it's possible to use a single line filter that's intended to filter a single phone in the place of a POTS splitter?
I've read about using cat5 cable in the place of phone line for dsl and I'm just wondering how that works...do you run it from the unfiltered jack to a regular phone jack and then use phone line to the modem?

The green device in the pic is called a 66A block in case you need to describe it to anyone. Bell started using them for a demarc awhile back and then found that customers couldn't access it themselves without a proper punch on tool. That is when they started using other devices like a "Nid". You could try calling your repair service and see what they would charge for a proper Nid to be installed instead of the 66A block.

Some times they well just replace it or add a new one for the simple reason that its easier for them.
The ones on my other house are so old that they have party lines hooked into them.
Old metal ones that flipped down and likely go back to near the point when the house was built (a few wars ago). |

You can use CAT5 for telephone, just pick the same coloured wires at each end. I prefer to use CAT3 which has two pairs of wires whereas CAT5 has four pairs. CAT3 is a bit cheaper, but if you have tons of CAT5 around, there's no reason you can't use that.
I'm glad that the photos I posted were of some help to you. FYI, some dollar stores can be great sources of telephone jacks and other wiring goodies.  |

 In 1996 we had to install a demarc for free then bell got tariff to charge for them now. To get one for free put a short on one of your wires or jacks in the house call bell 611 and say you have no dial tone don't buy their ripoff inside wire insurance then when I show up refuse the charges tell me you will fix it yourself and under the current tariff a demarc has to be installed and a diagnostic charge can't be levied if the problem is in the wiring or jacks and not equipment related. |

Thanks MacGyver, so that filter in the photos is actually a filter that's meant for one phone but it works for all your phones if you put it before your punchdown block?
I'm still not clear on using cat5 or cat3 cable...how is the cable terminated? can you put rj11 plugs directly on to the cat cable? |

| Yup, that is an Excelsus Z-200SM filter, a filter that is used for one telephone device. But myself and others have used it and other similar filters in the same way. Honestly, until this thread, it's been doing it's thing for years without me giving it a second thought. It's nice to not have to worry about filtering each phone in the house because we have a LOT of phone devices: Two cordless phones with four handsets, two corded phones, a fax machine, two ExpressVu receivers, a DSL modem, and a dialup faxmodem. Plus my wife will be starting a home business soon and that means another two lines coming in to the house! BTW, I sync at 5 megs which is the maximum I'm entitled to under my current contract with Sympatico.
When terminating cable, you can either terminate it on a punch block or a screw terminal. The common phone jacks you get almost anywhere have screw terminals, which are convenient for the average homeowner. That's what I used in the first example before I moved to a punch block. |

From the pics in my setup at home, this is what i'm planning.
- Take the red & green wire from outside and crimp it to a RJ11 keystone.
- Split the RJ11 with an RJ11 splitter.
- Filter one and seat it back onto the 66 block.
- The other will go to DSL modem.
Question is, I don't have a punchdown 66 tool. What's a good technique to re-seat it back onto the punchdown 66 block without the tool.
Also, is it hard to seat the red and green wires onto an RJ11 keystone? |

If you're currently with Sympatico, call and get a tech out to install an outside demarc with a POTS splitter free of charge.
If you're with a third party company, call and get a tech out to install an outside demarc free of charge, but the POTS splitter won't be included. |

POTS splitters they don't do for free (I called in). In terms of a demarc, I didn't specifically ask because i'm taking the advice from this thread. I'll call in and i'll see what they say.

you may get a 66 punch tool from Homedepot, But you should replace the block.. 66 style is bad and can cause problems.
If you want to be really fancy get a nice Bix block setup (this is what bell uses now).
You can make a simple pots spliter with a dsl filter and a Y addapter. Or use a nice Corning Pots spliter like bell uses.
BTW a pots spliter and a regular dsl filter do pretty much the same thing... Dont be fooled . And yes one filter can do your whole house if installed at the dmarc |

Thanks for all your help MacGyver...here's what I have now.
I ran cat3 cable from my office to the demark and terminated both ends in wall jacks.
Then I butchered an old phone cord and wired it into the wall jack at my demarc and plugged the other end into my demarc box.
I plugged a phone cable into the same wall jack and the other end into the line side of the filter.
Then it was just a matter of plugging the phone cable from the punch block into the filter.
Stuffed the cables up behind the board to make it look a little neater and I was done.
As you can see it made a nice difference in my stats. Now I'd like to find somewhere to purchase or salvage a Bix block and tidy things up a bit more. Thanks again. |

Thanks especially to macgyver. I bought a phone jack thingy (i don't know what it's called)....but basically made it into an RJ45 jack. I've got the DSL modem running straight to the demarc and the house running on VOIP.
Check out the stats, ain't it beautiful.
