It sounds like a corrupt flash, too me. Did you try to load the firmware using the tftp.exe flash utility?

Well, I was hoping to not have to tftp the thing again (orig I tftp'd wrt) so I tried a restore defaults and another gui flash and there it was.

Gonna watch my traffic for a spell - am I still leaving all those fields @ their defaults? Does it matter that I assign both lap/desk static ip's? Is there a wrt/configuration/help for idiots like yours truly? [Even the Wiki is abstruse I'm afraid].

Thank you,
All seems to be running well.

No,it doesn't matter if you assign a Static IP to any device, just as long as you assign them outside the range of the DHCP server's IP range.

The Wiki is the best resource for DD-WRT information, but most people just use the DD-WRT or DSL Report's forums to get help.

"No,it doesn't matter if you assign a Static IP to any device, just as long as you assign them outside the range of the DHCP server's IP range."
Can you please clarify? My router is 192.168.1.1, PC is 192.168.1.100, Lap is 192.168.1.101 (both manually assigned in XP)
How does one determine the DHCP server's IP range?

Click for full size
On the Setup/Basic Setup tab of the DD-WRT user interface, look for the "Network Address Server Settings (DHCP)".

There, you will see a "Start IP address" and right underneath that is the "Maximum DHCP Users".

So if the Start IP is 192.168.1.100,and the Max. DHCP Users is set at 50,then it will assign IP addresses from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149.

I currently have the Max set to 2, as I just have the two machines, and thought that having both machines within that range (just the 2 addresses: 100 & 101) was ideal -
and that assigning these same addresses in XP was simplifying (+ securing) things.

These addresses should be outside that range?
(sorry if I'm being obtuse)

The DHCP server function is there,to provide an IP address to network devices that are set to "Obtain an IP address Automatically". So if you are setting your PC and Laptop with a Static IP,then there is no use for the DHCP server, just disable it. Your PC and Laptop will still work.

Thank you Mountaineer,
I really do appreciate the help with this.

One last query:
I like to assign these addresses specifically because it allows for creating very strict firewall rules + it is my understanding that by manually designating the addresses to the XP machines I'm possibly eliminating one more operation to be performed by Windows at boot-time - but I also realize that by limiting my DHCP Max Servers to '2' in WRT, that the machines will probably just get the same two addresses anyway...

a) am I wrong?
b) to you recommend one or the other?

Maybe this will explain it better (DHCP)Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

Mountaineer, you've been a real sport.

Very informative, polite, and patient - a rare blend these days.

I thank you for your time and affability - I think I can take it from here.
