ip address changing daily, becoming an annoyance

hi all,

has anybody been having problems over the last couple of days with their ip address changing on a daily basis. i am using wireless router set to dmz and this ip changing is getting real annoying, im having to constantly find the new ip then reset my router and re-enable dmz to the new ip address.

i have never had a problem with my ip address changing except for the once when we had a power cut, at the time i had assigned a static ip as instructed by portforward.com when opening ports in my router, after the power cut was over i couldnt get online at all, i contacted cincy bell and they told me it was because of he static ip i had assigned. i undid everything i had done and set the router to dmz. everything has been fine until 3 days ago when my son shut of the power strip that my pc, router and modem are plugged into, now the ip address is changing at least once a day.

i always thought the ip address should stay the same unless my router gets reset, is there some reason why it would do this every day? im not too computer savvy but when i looked in the control panel at the network settings it says my connection has been running for 3 days (since my son unplugged everything)

Are you trying to access your home network from someplace else on the internet, or running some sort of server application? Those are the only reasons I can think of why your IP address would matter. If you are doing those things most routers let you setup a dns name using a free service like dyndns.org. The router will update the dns name to point to the new IP address every time it changes, and all you have to do is supply the name at the other end.

If you need a static IP, order one. The service is billed as dynamic. If you are trying to setup a server get a dynamic dns hostname

i use my playstation 3 via a wireless router, for that i have to open certain ports and rather than unblock all the ports one by one (which also requires the machines ip address) i just set the router to dmz. as soon as the ip changes the ports that i was using dmz to unlock are closed again until i change the ip that the dmz is set to.

it stopped changing lately, i set another static ip again and all was fine, then my pc broke so now im using a new pc, if the problems start up again ill set another static ip. if that screw up again ill order a static ip.

Are you referring to the WAN IP address, or the local IP address of the Playstation? As far as I know if you route the DMZ address to a particular machine, that machine is on the local LAN. You shouldn't have to mess with the DMZ settings if the WAN address changes.
