Thank you for this information. I use VMWare Workstation 5.5 but had a disaster trying to get Vista to work in it although it works great with XP and Linux.
So, after reading this thread, I installed Virtual PC 2007 SP1 and even though Microsoft said Vista would work as a guest only on XP Pro SP3 ( I still have SP2), I decided to try it.
I had tried Microsoft's Virtual PC years ago and vastly preferred VMWare. Virtual PC has changed a lot since then. After some rather wild stuff happening with the video and getting PCtools installed, having my paging file on the host not be large enough for Vista guest, and crashing the computer because of this, and to top it all off PG was blocking access to physical memory for Virtual PC and I couldn't see that as I was in full screen for Vista and I can't see a way to minimze the virtual machine anytime I want like I can do a great deal of the time in VMWare. Anyhow, I got Vista installed finally and then had a wild time with the PCtools install (I got an autoplay popup) and couldn't see how to just make it install...geez...then I got many black screens, weird dpi settings, etc. but finally I have it working fine.
So, thank you for alerting me to this. VMWare lacks any 3D affects so a lot was turned off for Vista. In Virtual PC (and it works fine on XP Pro SP2 contrary to what Microsoft says you don't need to have SP3 installed) I was seeing at least some of the aero effects until I switched to classic view. I have not yet accessed the internet on it and I don't think it will do well (even with Aero off) with 768MB RAM which is what I gave it.
