I've been on fast path and interleaved didn't seem to make any difference.

Also I've been on 10/768 as well as 1.5/256 also I didn't notice a difference. I only started having these disconnects when I switched to the E90 modem from the B90.

Here are my stats on the 10/768 as well as the 1.5/256 with the new modem

I have closed the poll, it appears with limited users to draw upon that this is a fairly common problem.

I have solved my problems by replacing my Westell 6100 with a D-Link all in one model DSL-2640B.

I lose my connection constantly during a thunder storm (goes out for about a minute or so then comes back on). So you think it's a modem issue?

Do you have a westell? If so then I would most likely say yes because I've had 3 westells and all had the same issue it would loose sync for a few moments when a thunderstorm rolled through. You can post your stats here and we can know a little bit more about it.

Looks like a nationwide shortage on this unit at the moment. I tried about a dozen online sources, everybody has it on backorder.

I wonder if the disconnects are due to static on the line because of the lightning. It would make sense that static noise could interfere enough to cause the link to drop.

I can't say that I've had any issues, but I live in a new subdivision with new wiring.

Add me to the list of CenturyTel users who have been experiencing disconnects during lightning storms. And at the same time I could often hear popping noises on the phone line during those same storms.

So I began to suspect that the two were related, and that it was the noise on the line that was causing the modem to disconnect. Which got me to thinking, that perhaps it was time to get a quality phone line splitter/filter. Which is why I recently spent $40 for this whole house DSL splitter/filter (which I installed in the basement, directly off the phone line as it came into the house): »www.wilcominc.com/Item.cfm?ProdID=100

And while I haven't had the thing long enough to know if it will solve all of my lightning disconnect problems (as I've only been through one lightning storm since installing it), I noticed the improvement almost immediately. After installing that device (to replace the cheap filters that originally came with my DSL modem), I noticed that static/popping on the phone line was greatly reduced AND the DSL modem was connecting to CenturyTel much quicker than before (and seemed to keep its connection longer). So clearly the device was working as advertised, to better "filter" for the needs of the phone lines and the DSL modem (then the cheap filters I had been using were).

So I guess the bottom line is that noise on the line can do nasty things to DSL connections, and lightning is just one of the things that can add noise to phone lines. While we might never be able to get rid of that noise (we don't control the weather, for example), we at least have the option to use quality phone line filters to minimize the impact on our phones and DSL lines. And just because you normally get decent speeds when you do connect (like I did, before upgrading my DSL filters), doesn't mean you don't "need" better DSL filtration (as my experience shows that quality filters can sometimes help you maintain the connection when noise would otherwise disconnect you).

It's so bad with my line that my kids think I'm psychic. I see my connection die and I yell, "I want some THUNDER!!!!" (which is, of course, followed by a clap of thunder). The wife and I have fun with it but it's very annoying.

Wow this thread took off again.

Update: I have changed back to my Westell as I should have some storms today/tomorrow. Just want to see if the line was the problem or equipment. Seems that 3 things were done at the same time. They fixed a fault in the line, lowered my rate to 8 down and I installed a new modem.

In response to the whole house filter, yes I had one installed.

The poll is opened again.

As I thought the Westell would disconnect with every lightning strike in my area. Switched back to the Dlink and had steady connection through the rest of the storm...

(added) I just looked at the price, I purchased this for about $100 less than they have listed now. I wonder what is up with that?

So far my lighting disconnects have stopped as well, but I'm still using the Westell modem. Had a Tech out last week and they installed a whole house filter in my antique NID and haven't had any disconnects yet. Also haven't had any really bad storms yet but had a few light ones and never lost connection.

Well known issue in the Bellsouth/AT&T Southeast Forum.
