Keep going over upload limit - cannot find legit source

I had Wildblue installed in January due to beginning to cyber-school my son and needing something faster than dial-up and no DSL or cable available in my rural area. I have had nothing but problems since, with the biggest being that my service was restricted twice within the last 6 weeks for going over my upload FAP limit. I am at a loss. I admit to downloading quite a bit (games, music, etc.), but I upload next to nothing. I have went over all the common culprits (web cam, online games, P2P, uploading pics, etc.), but I do none of these. I surf, I do a small amount of e-mail, download some from iTunes and I get my son's school lessons. That's pretty much it. I do have a wireless network, but I live in a very rural area and someone would have to be standing in my yard with a laptop to be able to piggyback my network. I have updated virus protection as well as both my computers and my routers are firewalled. Does anyone have any suggestions as to were this may be coming from. My only probable guess at this point is that Wildblue's usage monitors are as useless and unreliable as their customer service, but if you can come up with something else, please help me. I am tired of paying $50/mo. for 1 week of usable service. Thanks!

I would suggest you install one of the many monitoring programs that are available on your computers. There are a number of programs free that will tell how much is being uploaded and downloaded on each computer. I use a free program called NetMeter on each of my computers to keep track of my daily use. The program is not as comprehensive as some but will give you details of daily, weekly and monthly usage. You can set limits on this program that will alert you if your uploads or download are exceeding a predetermined limit.

Recently I noticed a large spike in my usage while I had not been using my WB that much. When I checked my computers I found a wireless laptop had two 1.5GB downloads exactly one week apart. I never use that laptop that much so I knew right away that was the source of my usage spike. Still don't know what these downloads were but now I lock the firewall on that machine when I'm not using it.

Take a look here to see NetMeter.

I am working on a theory and you can maybe help - both of us
I just tried this in past 2 days with a customer with similar troubles as yours and not enough time has gone by to give results to work with

If you PM me your phone # I will run SVT which will also show me the IP you are using now
Once I capture that I will contact you to power off your modem for several hours (at least 8 hours off) in an attempt to get you a different IP
I will check to see you have been assigned a different IP somewhere along way and will report back on this thread, where we can share what we find out

Then we can see if your usage trends in the right direction

You can do this power cycle experiment without me in loop but if I AM in loop I can do a lot more with that knowledge than you alone with it

I might be creating false hope but until we try...

Just to be clear, you were fapped specifically for going over the upload fap limit but you still had plenty of space free on the download fap limit?

"you were fapped specifically for going over the upload fap limit but you still had plenty of space free on the download fap limit?"

The customer I referred to in my earlier post had 9% on download and FAP'd on up side
went from fap on value to fap on select in 4 days, last two days went from 96% to FAP with nothing in LAN port of modem
Their historical usage has never exceeded 30% on either side - 2 year customer

rahmrh and Grover92000 are reporting unexplained sudden increases in upload usage without accompanying increases in download usage.

Yes. When I checked the google gadget last that lets you know what your usage is, my downloads were only at around 40%, but my uploads were over the FAP limit. That is what I cannot understand. If I had gone over my download limits I would not be nearly as suspicious. Thanks for everyone's help, since I posted I have downloaded "Bandwidth Monitor" so that I have something on my side to help me figure out what is going on. The only problem is that since they have limited my service, I can't even get enough of a connection to send e-mail, so I am back to using my dial-up, so I'm not really getting any useful information since I can't use the connection. I have also since been told from Wildblue (after my mom spent 2 hours on the phone arguing with them) that there is something not right with my dish (I have been trying to tell them that since they installed it), so they are sending someone out to check it, but they said that since it is past the 90 days, I may be charged like $100 for them to do it.

If you will work with me, it won't cost you anything but a tiny bit of time and you can be a part of the solution, possibly, for yourself and others

I helped my customer this week with a problem similar to yours but don't have enough data to work with to know if it was just luck or I have found the cause

I would like to see OP's SVT History

My customers history showed they were off line but I could see their computer's MAC and they could barely browse

Don't want to go into the 'solution' yet till I get more to work with

If someone in future with same problem does a search and finds this thread, maybe some progress can be made - who knows

I had a visit from the original installer today. He tried to re-aim/readjust my dish, but said he was getting "All green". He said that as far as all his tools tell him, my installation is good, but when he tried to connect (even using his laptop) he wasn't even getting enough of a connection most of the time to get to google's website. He said that he couldn't really tell much since my account had been FAP'd and left. He suggested that I upgrade my package so that I didn't keep going over the limit. I told him that I didn't know why I would upgrade my package when even when it isn't FAP'd it doesn't work very good and I don't see why I am going over. He said "Well when you do get the speed, you'll want the higher limits." Well if that day ever gets here I'll be amazed!

Did he look at your history within SVT?
Are you WB direct or a VAR?

Does anyone know how to fire Wild Blue without breaking the contract? I would rather use a data card from my cell phone provider for internet.

I don't think that he did look at my history. If he did, he didn't mention it. It is WB direct I think. The installer is from Tennessee and I live in PA. How does that make any sense?1?

Hello,
I am in the same boat. I have been a Wildblue customer for over two years. I explained extensively that I had no idea how my upload (not download) could be so high. No online games, nothing new at all. I called and called and kept getting haughty service people telling me that I HAD to have caused the excess use and they could not help me. Period. They told me that I could certainly pay more money to increase my bandwidth. I did. Four days later, without uploading ANYTHING I am FAPped again. I have complained to the FCC and the Vermont District Attorney's office. I suggest everyone do the same. The service is terrible and they don't listen.
Now, incidentally, my upload says 62% and the promised automatic return to full speed has not occurred.
By the way, aren't we paying for web hosting? That was part of what we signed up for, but now they don't have it. Have they lowered our cost? No.

I'm not sure what you mean. I sent you an IM over 3 hours ago with my phone number that you requested. I don't know what else you want me to do. If you tell me what to do I am more than willing to do it.

Well, the OP's problem is still in the air
A change in routers has been made and time will tell if it was the source of the problem

Op's problem didn't fit in my 'theory' scenario, durn it

What did the old router appear to be doing that would consume so much upload bandwidth ??
