| [XP Pro] Windows Installer corrupted...
On my wife's XP PRO SP 3 her Windows Installer is corrupted... When I go to install it can't be installed because the SP 3 is newer... MS says, "Set Up detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying...There is no need to install update..."
Any ideas...?... |

| It started yesterday when like that other person two of her words and office updates wouldn't update... I looked for a fix from what they said was the problem and MS said it was the Window Installer and I did what they said but then I go to the next place they tell me to and there is no new installer for SP 3... I didn't give it much thought, then today I noticed that her Flash was out of date and it wouldn't install... Looks like Windows installer is not working... |

Start > Run > msiexec /unregister > OK
then,
Start > Run > msiexec /regserver > OK |

| said by kcazzie : Failed to install... Then it tells me to change some setting in Active X, to no prevail... What is the exact message you get?
If your Windows Installer is corrupted the following MS KB article has more things to look at:

| reply to kcazzie I would:
Note: Make a System Restore Point prior to these steps.
1. Do the Rename operations discussed in auggie 's KB link. You can ignore any other discussion in that KB. Do this with a slight variation:
Start, Run, CMD and press Enter
cd c:\windows\system32\dllcache
attrib -r -s -h msi.dll attrib -r -s -h msiexec.exe msiexec.old attrib -r -s -h msihnd.dll ren msi.dll msi.old ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
cd C:\windows\system32 attrib -r -s -h msi.dll attrib -r -s -h msiexec.exe msiexec.old attrib -r -s -h msihnd.dll ren msi.dll msi.old ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
exit
2. Download and install Windows Installer 3.1: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···6fd4138c

Edit; System Restore isn't working too... But I have been running ERUNT...
EditII;I went to install something else (just to check) and it says Windows Installer is not correctly installed...?...
EditIII; Also noticed that Windows Installer will not stay started like my other XP... (in services) ... |

| You have multiple issues. It appears that even the WMI service is damaged.
At least uninstall Service Pack 3. You will not be able to install Flash or anything else until you resolve the Windows Installer issue.
After the uninstall of Service Pack 3, try the repair methods for the Windows Installer discussed above. If no joy, to a repair in-place reinstallation of XP with a slipstream of Service Pack 3. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to kcazzie I guess I'm not the only one with this problem...
"After completing the installation of XP SP3 and the necessary restarts I am unable to install any new software that uses the Windows Installer. Also tried re-registering per the KB and restarting to have it work properly but no luck."

| Do this then:
1. Use Add or Remove Progams and uninstall SP3.
2. Then first try an install of Windows Installer 3.1
3. If it refuses to install, do my entire earlier set of instructions, with a new addition as the first step:
Start, run, msiexec /unregister -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to kcazzie A little OT... If you want to check the 'Version of Windows Installer' you are running here's a little vbs browser hosted script to find out... Mine is 3.14001.5512, and every time I want to install MS Installer I can't, because I have the newest version I guess... ... And MS doesn't have that one out for use yet, I guess it came with SP 3...!...

| The Windows Installer is not fine. You need to force an installation/reinstallation of Windows Installer 3.1 prior to trying SP3 again.
The issue is that one or more of the Windows Installer DLLs is mis-versioned. XP SP3 will try to reconcile versioning differences based on the record stored as your baseline in $hf_mig$. If what is recorded there are your Cardinal Points for the Installer, issues will ensue.
1. Uninstall SP3 as you have done. 2. Try first a new install over the top with the newer Windows Installer 3.1 redistributable. If that works, you are good to go. 3. If that does not work, do the renaming operation I discussed earlier:
a. msiecec /unregister b. Renaming:
cd c:\windows\system32\dllcache
attrib -r -s -h msi.dll attrib -r -s -h msiexec.exe attrib -r -s -h msihnd.dll ren msi.dll msi.old ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
cd C:\windows\system32 attrib -r -s -h msi.dll attrib -r -s -h msiexec.exe attrib -r -s -h msihnd.dll ren msi.dll msi.old ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
exit
4. Reboot.
5. Now install the Windows Installer 3.1 redistributable. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users
