is my router completely useless

the other day I think our router died when it was connected to our modem. it wasn't getting an ip address from the modem. my question is if I can manually set the host and domain name again can it be used as an access point.i other words can the linksys communicate to our new router and the linksys can be sortof a private network.

Not getting an IP address from your modem is no indication that your router is dead.

Without knowing the model of Linksys you own, it is tough to say if it can be used as an access point.

With the use of 3rd party firmware, such as DD-WRT, you can set it up as an access point. If you're able to log into your WRT54GS it is not dead, but more likely a configuration issue.

A little more information would be useful. What version of WRT54GS do you have? When you say you tried DD-WRT, did you first check to see what version of DD-WRT would be required based on your WRT54GS's version number? Have you tried resetting the router (both short and long)?

By not properly installing a firmware it could brick the router rendering it useless.

v16 does not support that router you need v23 sp2 or higher for it to work
