Finger2208 : As promised I have an update on the install of AVG8 plus Firewall on my Inspiron laptop. After running around with Dell regarding the hard drive I finally purchased one outside of Dell and got it all freshly installed with XP SP3. BTW, I would love to choke the crap out of the "Dude, you should have got a Dell" guy....I now remember why I'm not a Dell fan! It was a complete pain messing with them.

In any event I got everything installed properly (drivers, etc.) without the Dell bloatware and running great. I proceeded to install AVG8 plus Firewall. At the end of the install I received a fatal error and the laptop rebooted. Upon reboot my wireless was bricked!! AVG8 had only partially installed, and I had no wireless access, and was unable to fix the issue. It had pancaked my wireless adapter, making it impossible to even connect to my router via wireless, much less run the thing.

I was able to fix the issue by going back to a prior restore point. Then installed AVG 7.5 plus Firewall and all is great. But just being honest here....I did have major issues with the AVG8 plus Firewall on install. I believe it was the firewall portion of the install that crapped.

So I have had 2 very different experiences with AVG8. On my custom tower all is well with AVG8 Pro, while the laptop choked on the AVG8 plus Firewall install. I can't really state how AVG8 ran on the laptop, as I was unable to get the laptop to the point of being able to actually run the thing with AVG8. Back to AVG 7.5 plus Firewall does fix my issue for now.

It's just strange how some users have reported major issues, while others like myself have no issues. In fact, running my current config I would have to say that AVG 8 is browsing faster than what I had under AVG 7.5. Basically all I did differently was to disable AVG Safe Surf in IE, along with removing the SpyBot 1.5.2 immunization to prevent the detections in AVG during a scan. I attribute the faster browsing to both the disabled add on and removing the SpyBot immunization.

Below are my main system specs in a little more detail. Also noticed desktop icons go blank and refresh randomly and it's caused by avgrsx also. I set the paths to all program shortcuts to be ignored by AVG, but it makes no difference, avgrsx still scans these files and causes long menu delays. If it doesn't bother you to go inside the box I would try and remove a stick of ram and see if the problem persists. Just a thought...

Thanks for the reply. I've never had problems with any programs due to using 4GB of RAM. I really don't think the RAM is the cause, I'm about 99.9% sure it's AVG 8 and I will not down grade hardware to make something work that should work anyway. 4GB really helps my VMWare virtual machines.

And no driver problems, I have the latest from Dell. The same drivers that have worked for several years with no problems. This is not my first rodeo, I fix other peoples PC's on a regular basis. The only thing new beside SP3 is AVG 8 and I've not any problems with SP3 on at least 8 difference PC's.

When you installed, did you also use your Dell resource CD and install all the needed drivers? I'm curious, as my daughter crapped her Latitude's hdd about a year ago. She attempted to install the OS herself, and installed incorrect drivers from the Dell website. Her laptop was extremely laggy, to the point that she made the three hour drive home from college for me to fix it.
