Maybe I spoke to soon, after tweaking I thought everything was fine. I may have to find another AV program, because the behavior of AVG 8 is unacceptable.

Now I have random problems when opening the start menu. Program shortcuts do not respond, it's like the menu delay is turned on the slowest delay setting, when I have it set to the fastest.

I know it's caused by AVG 8, cause "avgrsx.exe" goes to 100% CPU usage while the menu is hung. As soon as "avgrsx.exe" goes back to zero the menu opens. It seems like forever, but probably a 5-15 second delay at times, depending on the size of the shortcut folder. Also noticed desktop icons go blank and refresh randomly and it's caused by avgrsx also. I set the paths to all program shortcuts to be ignored by AVG, but it makes no difference, avgrsx still scans these files and causes long menu delays. Turning off the resident shield fixes the problem, but what's the point of a AV that you can't leave turned on.

The PC that is having these problems is not a blazing fast new dual core PC, but it's not bad either (P4-3.4, 4-GB Memory) Dell 8400. This is a clean, new install with SP3 that seemed to be very fast, till the AVG 8 problems.
Yeah, it definitely shouldn't be doing that. I'm running a slower CPU, P4 3.06 with 1 GB of rdram. My rig is not a Dell, but a custom (Asus mobo, etc.) I simply disabled the AVG Safe Surf in IE7 and have had none of those types of issues, with an install of XP that is 3 years old now! And yes, I have SP3 as well.

I'm kind of wondering if the 4 GB of ram is messing with it somehow, as it is the top limit for a 32 bit install. If it doesn't bother you to go inside the box I would try and remove a stick of ram and see if the problem persists. Just a thought...
Thanks for the reply. I've never had problems with any programs due to using 4GB of RAM. I really don't think the RAM is the cause, I'm about 99.9% sure it's AVG 8 and I will not down grade hardware to make something work that should work anyway. 4GB really helps my VMWare virtual machines.

And no driver problems, I have the latest from Dell. The same drivers that have worked for several years with no problems. This is not my first rodeo, I fix other peoples PC's on a regular basis. The only thing new beside SP3 is AVG 8 and I've not any problems with SP3 on at least 8 difference PC's.

Good luck! I hope you find an AV app that runs well on your Dell.

Nothing wrong with your PC.

If you google avgrsx you'll find many people have the same problem (me too).

I'm very dissapointed. I've used AVG for years, recommend it to other people, but now it have that "100% CPU performance" problem

Probably not anything "wrong" with his pc at all. It's just strange how some users have reported major issues, while others like myself have no issues. In fact, running my current config I would have to say that AVG 8 is browsing faster than what I had under AVG 7.5. Basically all I did differently was to disable AVG Safe Surf in IE, along with removing the SpyBot 1.5.2 immunization to prevent the detections in AVG during a scan. I attribute the faster browsing to both the disabled add on and removing the SpyBot immunization.

Below are my main system specs in a little more detail. Although the rig runs well and I game online competitively with it, it is by no means a powerhouse by current standards. BTW, all my boxes except my Inspiron laptop are custom built by me.

Mobo = Asus P4T-533C (latest release BIOS)
CPU = P4 3.06 (533 FSB)
Ram = 1 GB Kingston rev. 2 pc1066 rdram (@ 1066 Mhz)
Video = eVGA 6800GS CO (nVidia 84.56 forceware drivers - AGP 4X)
Onboard RealTek sound
Onboard Intel LAN
Nothing O/C'ed
XP Pro SP3 (3 year old install)

So obviously it's not a screamer, but does run well. Very well for what it is....well enough that I've not been forced to build a new one.

I will be upgrading (hopefully) my Inspiron next week to AVG 8. I am waiting on a new HDD for it as mine failed. I will post as to how it goes on the laptop, whether it runs well or craps it out. I'm now very curious as to what's going to happen! Right now I haven't a clue after reading some of the posts

AVG 7.5 used to take about 2 hrs so scan my computer. AVG 8 was taking 9 hours. Also 8 kept locking my computer up and had to reboot regularly. Put 7.5 back on and it is fine. Also on 8 can't get the command line to work. Does 8 have a command line?

Don't bother as mentioned resident shield brings cpu to 100% while browsing internet, opening explorer, and opening winzip/rar if heuristics is on in resident shield options.

I tried everything, still no go, except, now I use my spyware doctore with antivirus for resident shield and turned avg8's off....avg 8 is now strictly a backup scanner.

Yep, I know it's not my PC, AVG8's problems are wide spread. I've moved on to Avira Free and it seems to work very well.

I wish I could change the title of this thread and add (I spoke to soon) but the edit function is gone. Good luck to everyone finding what works best for them. I would give AVG another chance if they would fix the numerous problems, I like the new interface.

No need to change the title.
You tried to do something to fix what was wrong and to help others do the same.
Nothing wrong with that.
I also moved on to Avira and am quite pleased with it.
Good Luck!

To get rid of the "Dropdown Notification" all you have to do is change 2 files in the "AVG8" folder located in "Program Files".
Change avgresf.dll to> avgresf.dll.bak
Change avgmwdef_us.mht to> avgmwdef_us.mht.bak
Thanks for that...

The notification dropdown was driving me insane fast...

Here it is 6/1/08 and my avg 7.5 is still merrily chugging away and I didn't even get one of those annoying update screens. I think I'll stand pat for now.

Testing PC Tools AV and Avira on two rigs at the moment. Will leave AVG 7.5 on the third for now but if that nag screen comes on one more time and freezes my PC overnight then it's bye bye to the final AVG install. Sorry to say because AVG has been great for years.

If anyone is encountering an issue with an HP Network printer not printing in Vista IE V7 (Unless you turn off Protected Mode in IEV7), and you are running AVG V8... read this thread: »[Vista] Printer that prints test page--but won't print in IE

The problem was AVG V8!!!

Problem went away when AVG V8 was removed!

So I was about to sit down tonight and finally update from AVG 7.5 to 8,,,BUT then I see all the problems others seem to be having. I liked the tweaking ideas, but seriously I reckon I would only fail and stuff things up at this end : (

So,,, for those who have given up on AVG 8,,,,what are you planning to use? And is it free?

Help/knowledge would be appreciated.

Good point, but I've used AVG for a long time and I don't mind doing a little tweaking. I'm a tweaker, whether it's a car or a PC, I have to tweak every setting or any part that's tweakable. Takes me weeks to get my PC setup the way I want it after a fresh install.

I've used AVG for the past 9 yrs and am not in the slightest bit inclined to jump throught the hoops you've jumped through in order to get the app working to your satisfaction. The other guy got it right: It should work out of the box. And, I might add, I shouldn't have to be a freakin' coder in order to "tweak" it. AVG is dead to me now.

I found after checking into the new d/l for free avg, if you do a custom install, you get to uncheck boxes for the safe search, email, and plugins. So, you don't really have to do any tweaking except to get rid of the nag and that is easy.

Did you read the entire thread or just stop there?
I've already stated, after further review, all that didn't fix the problems.

I've moved on to Avira. Still have to jump through a few hoops to get Avira working to my liking, as with most software these days.

Everyone has to choose what works best for them. Just passing along some info, hoping to safe other people some frustration.

As promised I have an update on the install of AVG8 plus Firewall on my Inspiron laptop. After running around with Dell regarding the hard drive I finally purchased one outside of Dell and got it all freshly installed with XP SP3. BTW, I would love to choke the crap out of the "Dude, you should have got a Dell" guy....I now remember why I'm not a Dell fan! It was a complete pain messing with them.

In any event I got everything installed properly (drivers, etc.) without the Dell bloatware and running great. I proceeded to install AVG8 plus Firewall. At the end of the install I received a fatal error and the laptop rebooted. Upon reboot my wireless was bricked!! AVG8 had only partially installed, and I had no wireless access, and was unable to fix the issue. It had pancaked my wireless adapter, making it impossible to even connect to my router via wireless, much less run the thing.

I was able to fix the issue by going back to a prior restore point. Then installed AVG 7.5 plus Firewall and all is great. But just being honest here....I did have major issues with the AVG8 plus Firewall on install. I believe it was the firewall portion of the install that crapped.

So I have had 2 very different experiences with AVG8. On my custom tower all is well with AVG8 Pro, while the laptop choked on the AVG8 plus Firewall install. I can't really state how AVG8 ran on the laptop, as I was unable to get the laptop to the point of being able to actually run the thing with AVG8. Back to AVG 7.5 plus Firewall does fix my issue for now.

After reconfiguring AVG8 it still slows down my p4 so when it comes to protection AVG8 is better than AVG 7.5 but when it comes to the performance AVG 7.5 is much better for an older pc's
