[XP Home] Trouble installing SP3 on XP Home "Handle is invalid"

I downloaded SP3 from windows update and tried to install it on my desktop with Windows XP Home. During the install, I get a "handle is invalid" error. SP3 is then uninstalled and I am forced to reboot and SP3 is not installed. What am I doing wrong?

My copy of SP2 is valid and I do have SP2 on my computer. Disabling the antivirus/spyware software did not help.

I was able to install SP3 on my Dell Laptop that had XP Pro on it.

Thank you!

There are maybe a dozen threads curently active here and in the Security forum over these issues.

Have you seen or read them?

It would help if you posted the Error Code, and not just the Error text. Did you write this down?

You can likely find the full message by looking at the service pack installation log. The message and error details will be listed near the very bottom:

Open the Svcpack.log file. By default, this file is located in the C:\Windows folder. To open the Svcpack.log file, click Start, click Run, type %windir%\svcpack.log, and then click OK.

I checked over the threads and didn't see any with the same error I am getting. Google didn't find much on my error either.

bcastner:

2264.688: Update.exe extended error code = 0x6

Is this what you are looking for, or something else?

Frankly, since Udpate.exe is involved this is an Windows Installer error, so you know it is not a Packager or Hotfix level failure.

I suspect this is in the "Do" class, of which there are two. Here is an example of the Registry portion of the "Do" class:

21.060: DoRegistryUpdates:UpdSpInstallFromInfSection Failed for
ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.ReInstall error: 0x6
21.060: INF_REGISTRY Failed
21.060: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed
21.101: VerifyTargetFileSize: Unable to verify size as Source = NULL for
file c:\winnt\oem7.cat
21.761: The handle is invalid.

Recommendation:
• Download the "Network Installation" stand-alone image.
• Boot to Safe Mode (without Networking).
• Check to be sure your Antivirus is disabled.
• Do the install from the download.

If you cannot manage to do the installation without it failing, contact Microsoft:

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

I looked over the service pack file some more and it appears to be a Do class. Here is what I found:

1440.281: DoInstallation: Installing assemblies with source root path: c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\65cb51275f131ad95a646f305f973e3a\
1449.000: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:RegQueryValueEx Failed: 0x2
1449.000: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:RegQueryValueEx Failed: 0x2
1449.469: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:RegQueryValueEx Failed: 0x2
1450.156: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:RegQueryValueEx Failed: 0x2
1450.375: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:RegQueryValueEx Failed: 0x2
1450.734: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:RegQueryValueEx Failed: 0x2
1450.734: Num Ticks for Copying files : 711750
1457.078: DoRegistryUpdates:UpdSpInstallFromInfSection Failed for ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install error: 0x6
1457.078: INF_REGISTRY Failed
1457.078: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed
1481.188: Unregistration of sprecovr successful
1481.625: The handle is invalid.

Should I still continue with what you suggested in your last email, or does the above change what I should do?

Thank you!

It certainly looked like a DoRegistry error, as I suggested. Thank you for the confirming log.

1. Try Step #3 in this KB article for Access Denied errors: »support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

2. Then try the installation again, following my earlier notes above as to using Safe Mode.

Let us know how it sorts for you.

Best wishes,

Bill:

I followed your directions above and unfortunately they didn't work. I guess I will have to contact MS and hope they can sort it out.

Thank you!

So the tool should be fine with XP Home then, even though it does not mention XP Home in the registry reset?

Thanks, thought it might, just that the info on Microsoft doesn't even mention XP Home
