Re: BEFW11S4 with Belkin wireless card problem

OK, bear with me because I'm not very knowledgeable about this networking stuff...

1. Both computers are running Win XP Pro SP2.
2. I am using the Belkin wireless configuration for the adapter.
3. I left the SSID at the default "linksys" and I don't have any other security settings that I know of. (I don't really understand this wireless security stuff)

Also, since I did a bunch of Win XP updates on the computer with the wireless card it seems to be working much better... Does that make any sense?

Installing windows updates may help..

It would be better to change the SSID of the router to a different name so that you can make sure that you are connecting to your own wireless network. So, instead of having "linksys" as your SSID, change it to a different name of your choice. It would also help if you will enable the wireless security. Just set it to 64 bit WEP. You may click on this link for instructions on how to enable the WEP on the router.

After changing the SSID and setting up the WEP on the router, configure it on the settings of the Belkin wireless configuration. When you are already connected, observe the connection if it will be stable or not.

Good information... Thank you!

Another question... I still have the original firmware in this "old" router... The router is a BEFW11S4 V4... It has firmware version 1.45.3 (Jul 1, 2003)... I downloaded but have not yet installed the latest firmware... Is there any reason, or risk, in updating the firmware??...

Upgrading the firmware of the router will improve its performance. You will only update the firmware of the router if you have problems with it as the firmware updates only addresses fixes on some issues of the router. But if you're okay with the performance of the router, there's no need to upgrade its firmware.

The only risk in updating the firmware of the router is, if you will update it with the wrong firmware version. So if you will upgrade the firmware of the router, be sure to install the correct firmware for it.

Since you have BEFW11S4 v4 with firmware version 1.45.3 (Jul 1, 2003), I recommend that you update it first with later firmware version than the latest one which is 1.50. You may click on this link to download firmware version 1.50 for BEFW11S4 v4.

»ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/befw···-150.zip

After installing the firmware version 1.50, you may already install the latest firmware version of the router which is 1.52.02.
