The fact that other Windows Updates did not show a problem is not relevant to the case of Service Packs. Service Pack 2 would have thrown the same error.

You have to edit boot.ini and remove the "/Kernel" switch that is now on the startup line.

I was having the same problem hayc59 See Profile is having and thanks to bcastner See Profileand the link he provided i found out that Tuneup Utilities was what was causing my XP SP3 update to not install, so i followed the instruction at the Microsoft link and what d you know SP3 installed without a hitch.
