Since that post was in the Hughes forum, I was rather brief; if there's more info that you would like, I'm happy to expand on it.

The biggest problem with talking about iDirect is that it is NOT a service, but rather it is a technology, hardware and software. That technology is sold by dozens of providers, and some of those have as many as 25 different plans. That makes it very hard to choose - it is a really big buffet!

Would this be about standard fare?

"Standard" is something one would not apply to iDirect plans, but it is a pretty good cross-section of what you are likely to find.

Skycasters offers one of the lowest-priced plans out there, with their $149 plan. I've run into a couple of people on it, and they are quite happy and profess to get their full speed of 1500 down most of the time.

Skycasters accomplishes this by having one of the tightest FAPs around, with that account set at 1GB per month. The happy campers on that account are low-volume folks, mostly e-mail. It is the FAP equivalent, per month, of 5 days on Hughes.

If you feel that your usage is that low (and would stay that low even when you had great speed, which is a temptation to use it!), you would likely be very happy with it.

I move an average of 15GB per month, which I spread across all of the accounts I have (Hughes, iDirect, Sprint), so I have trouble imagining an account that would add another $1400 per month to get that volume!

As Don pointed out, the usage before FAP on a Skycasters account is very low....additionally, you are locked into a 2 year deal to offset the subsidizing of equipment costs. I'd think long and hard before committing to ANY ISP for that long.

I'd think long and hard before committing to any ISP but a two year contract doesn't particularly disturb me if it saves me noticeably in setup or monthly fees. If I didn't have reason to trust an ISP would be providing good service two years from now, I don't think I'd put any money into equipment or installation or the hassle of getting it setup.

It's extremely expensive and restrictive, but only ridiculous if you have a better solution to bring to the table.

For my use, a T1 line would probably be a better value than that, but there are locations where a T1 is prohibitively expensive simply to install the line.

Location, location, location.
