Did a "stripper" install.
(1) Used START -> RUN command line install to eliminate the toolbar:
c:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
(2) Did not install the E-Mail Scanner or the Office plug-in.
(3) Disabled ( by renaming ) avgmwdef_us.mht and avgresf.dll to eliminate the update nag drop down.
(4) Cleaned the registry of all "ewido" keys prior to install.
(5) Set the auto-update schedule to 3 AM ( computers are usually powered off then ) so I could use Task Scheduler to do multiple silent updates - T. S. crux command line is:
"C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgupd.exe" /sched=
( Don't use this as a startup Task - schedule a couple of times a day )
I'd just as soon disable auto update and do it my way, as I did with 7.5 - but then it gives you the red "!" on the tray icon.
Uses more RAM, but my boxes have 2048K, so don't think that really matters.
Works fine, but too many work-arounds - even if you like 'em, like I do.
AVG 8 needs a good install tune-up before it's ready for prime time.
On demand scans are marginally slower, browsing also marginally slower - but acceptable.
Once the install is done, the only AVG file which needs firewall permission is avgupd.exe. |
