| quote: I have upgraded to 8.0 & it's somewhat buggy
IMO this version needs some work but it is not a disaster. AVG needs to fix a couple of things IMO like:
Disabled items wording. The notification should not be a warning that something is wrong just call it what it is:
"This feature has been disabled by the user". or "Feature disabled"
Better layout in the GUI. Seems more steps need taken to accomplish tasks that one or two clicks took care of in v7.5 ---------------------------------------------- In the interim I switched to Avast and it is working fine and has an excellent feature set and layout. -- "When the questions get tough the tough pull a MuMu". - unknown |

Brain Pain Premium join:2004-01-11 Guelph, ON | reply to SnowyOne I updated to version 8 but it performed so badly on my machine that I went back to 7.5. Even though my subscription runs until the end of 2009 Ill choose another AV come December when 7.5 is no longer supported. |

| reply to SnowyOne I updated 3 machines to 8.0 and although not totally enamored haven't had any major problems. Just getting used to the newness and some of the changes bothers me. Scans do take a bit longer than version 7.5 and I do not like that you cannot disable things without a big red reminder in the taskbar. |

| reply to SnowyOne Re: An AVG 8.0 Update Poll
Did a "stripper" install.
(1) Used START -> RUN command line install to eliminate the toolbar:
c:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
(2) Did not install the E-Mail Scanner or the Office plug-in.
(3) Disabled ( by renaming ) avgmwdef_us.mht and avgresf.dll to eliminate the update nag drop down.
(4) Cleaned the registry of all "ewido" keys prior to install.
(5) Set the auto-update schedule to 3 AM ( computers are usually powered off then ) so I could use Task Scheduler to do multiple silent updates - T. S. crux command line is:
"C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgupd.exe" /sched=
( Don't use this as a startup Task - schedule a couple of times a day )
I'd just as soon disable auto update and do it my way, as I did with 7.5 - but then it gives you the red "!" on the tray icon.
Uses more RAM, but my boxes have 2048K, so don't think that really matters.
Works fine, but too many work-arounds - even if you like 'em, like I do.
AVG 8 needs a good install tune-up before it's ready for prime time.
On demand scans are marginally slower, browsing also marginally slower - but acceptable.
Once the install is done, the only AVG file which needs firewall permission is avgupd.exe. |

| reply to SnowyOne They really should have not released it until it was more bug free. They really had a good AV for years. light not boggy and yet effective? Must have hired a new PR team and development bunch from somewhere else.
Update
Did get it working here finally with the kb patch and not running the site check app. even managed to get the email scanner going for windows mail. Its a great improvement or they changed something as well? this was a fresh copy. |

| reply to SnowyOne How about an "I used AVG untill I tried 8.0 and uninstalled and switched to another AV app" vote? |

| reply to SnowyOne Have no problems with AVG8 on WinXP machines.
But will soon be switching to another antivirus on a W2K machine. AVG8 update/scans don't work. The only solution over at the AVG8 forums is that AVG8 will not work on FAT32 systems and one has to convert the file system to NTFS. I do know that NTFS is better than FAT32 but I do not want an antivirus to force me to switch.
There is no mention of AVG8's incompatibility to FAT32 systems in any of their FAQs. Probably they released it without testing on all systems which they have said AVG8 is compatible with. Not good for a big antivirus company. |

| reply to SnowyOne After reading about AVG 8 I decided I didn't want to install it, so I asked for info here and installed Avast on our XP computer this morning. So far, all is well.
I will also install Avast on my 98se computer, since AVG 7.5 will stop being supported by the end of May.
Sincerely, Libra |

| reply to SnowyOne I used AVG until yesterday, but after reading about the issues reported by others here, I chose not to upgrade. Instead, I removed AVG 7.5 and installed Avira AntiVir in its place. So far, so good. Its only downside is a pesky ad that appears at every update.
I should also mention that an important issue for me was the inclusion of AVG AntiSpyware (once Ewido) in AVG 8.0. I did not want this (bad experiences in the past) and the manual for AVG 8 did not give any clues about avoiding its use. |

| reply to SnowyOne AVG8 also deletes the files it detects as malware instead of putting them in the vault, in a default installation. Some users have compalined of having files lost which they know are 'safe'. Users have to use the adavnced settings to force AVG8 to only quarantine instead of deleting the detected 'malicious' files.
It is a known fact AVG8 detects the immunisation entries of Spywareblaster/SpybotSD as spyware and removes the entries requiring them to be reinstated. I find that it however does not detect them as spyware when updating the entries in spywareblaster/spybotSD till a new scan is done. |
