Of course there are market divisions in the VG business. These companies release these consoles and handhelds in response to one another. Just because the Wii isn't 1080P doesn't make it not a competitor in the TV top console business.
What determines competition is what products people consider when they buy. If there was no Wii, would there be more PS3's sold? Absolutely. If there was no DS sold, would there be more PS3's sold? Unlikely.
People, not fanboys determine what is competition and when it comes to parents going into Best Buy considering a console, the 3 products in their heads are Wii, 360 and PS3 (and PS2 if they don't already have one).
So while Nintendo may explain away lower graphics capability in exchange for revolutionary controls and a much lower price, it doesn't make the Wii any less of a competitor to Microsoft and Sony's flagship consoles in the marketplace.
Wii is a direct competitor to the PS3 and 360 by virtue of the fact they take sales from them. Doesn't matter what the specs are. And yes, if the Atari VCS were still on the market and was stealing sales from the PS3, of course it would be a competitor. But my guess is no one would buy a VCS INSTEAD of a PS3 like people buy Wii INSTEAD of PS3. |
