I do not doubt that it's, in totality, an amazing achievement. We'll know how good when it gets some critical testing.
But, my problem with KIS6/KIS7 has been the extremely high learning curve/high degree of (proper) install/usage difficulty for the "average" user. You know them .. anyone who's ever used KIS6/KIS7 knows them .. those people who you know you CANNOT recommend the software to because it is BEYOND their ability to properly use/troubleshoot!
I've spent some number of weeks playing with various builds of the new KIS8 .. and, I think, "vastly different" and "will take some getting used to" are an understatement. In fact, if KIS6/KIS7 are IN ORBIT difficult for the average user to use .. Kaspersky, with KIS8, now leaves orbit heading for DEEP SPACE difficult!
There's more crap going on in KIS8 than one can even begin to shake a stick at! And, it's slung across the GUI from one end to the other .. can we say toooooooo busy?!?
But, hey, I think it's the best anti-malware software currently available on this planet .. period!
Too, personally, I also think that KIS8 moves them towards eliminating "above average" users from their potential customer-base.

If KAV/KIS 8 eliminates the "average user" and the "above average" user, who the heck does that leave, the "extremely above average" user? 
I ran KIS 7 in the past, and didn't find it all that difficult to use. If that makes me an "above average" user, so be it, although I've never thought of myself that way. I've check out another forum since I started this thread, to see if I could get any more info on this new version. From what I've read, and especially what I saw, I think KL should have kept it lean, and kept version 7's GUI, or maybe just tweaked it a little. I think I'll pass on this one. | |

I don't think that KIS 2009 is hard to use or learn at all and I am an average user. Actually I think that it is easier since most apps are preconfigured now. Don't get as many popup's & questions now which will make it easier for the average user.
Yes, it is different from V6 & V7, but I think it's better. I have checked out all the settings and have changed a few things, but it wasn't that hard to figure out what I was looking for.
The only thing that I would recommend is to check the preconfigured apps and make sure that there isn't something in there that is allowed internet access that you want to deny access for. There was a couple of apps that I changed from allowed to deny, but that wasn't a big deal and wasn't hard to do.
As I said before I think it's better and I like it better and I think after most users get used to the new features they will also. | |

And, I think you've underestimated your abilities.
No, as for user experience, everyone has their own thoughts as to what constitutes "below-average-above" and additional levels beyond "above average".
Regardless of where that all falls, this area highlights my most frustrating experience with Kaspersky .. thinking it to be among the very best products (KIS, certainly) available and simultaneously KNOWING that I'm personally aware of lot's of folks that, I believe, are incapable of using the software. They are virtually unaware of security, to say nothing of the dangers. They, mostly continually, struggle with malware infections while being unaware that malware is responsible for whatever current problem they face, from system slowdown to not being able to access certain programs any longer while, suddenly (if ever), discovering they possess NEW programs they're certain they didn't install. Forget rootkits. They are clicking here, clicking there going to "EXTRA protection required" sites. Hell, they're doing financial transactions from banking to purchases. They are, completely, clueless! Do these folks just live within my little realm I call home? Don't you know these people?
And, with all the time you've spent on the forum helping .. from perpetual problems with folks just getting the software INSTALLED, let along using it .. if you do know some of the people I've described, would you recommend Kaspersky to them?
Yes, as you said, some functions with KIS8 have been simplified .. but, it's still, in my estimation, beyond the clueless people I know .. I still cannot recommend it. Too, I suppose it's now no secret, I detest the KIS8 gui. Oh well.

I understand what your saying and no, I probably would not recommend it to the people you have described.
If someone like you described wanted to use it I would strongly recommend that they download the full user manual and read it throughly before even installing Kaspersky. That way they would have a better idea what it is about and decide if they could learn to use it.
I think with a little know how and a through reading of the user manual most average users will be able to use the program without too many problems.
It still is not a install and forget program, which is what most average users, especially the ones that you have described wants.
In my opinion, if you want something bad enough you will be willing to learn. I think Kaspersky is definitely worth taking the time to learn to use it.
As for the KIS 2009 GUI, I think it could have been made a little more user friendly.
