|  [DSL] Confused about RWIN settings
Ok here are the answers to the 11 questions:

9) There is another pc hooked up to my router. It has its own wireless internet but doesn't work unless it is hardwired to my router. I have no idea if they are networked. I have never set up a network or VPN. A friend set it up for me.

11) The tool for figuring CO distance is not working but I know mine is about a block away from me.
I just want to know if I should change my RWIN settings. I have used the Dr.TCP tool and the field is already filled in with 256960. This is much higher than what the tweak FAQ says it usually is. The tweak test recommended 28560 - 75684. It said the higher the number the better so should I leave it the way it is. I have already done the command prompt test to figure out my MTU and I have changed it to 1468 on my pc and router. As of the posting of these results, I have not rebooted so my new MTU setting may not be reflected in test results. I also wanted to mention that I kept getting a time out message when I was doing the command prompt ping tests. I went to great pains to make sure my pc was free of malware and other things. I upgraded my RAM to 1 gb. I still have really slow internet and it hangs constantly. |

| Well I guess I answered my own question lol. I just rebooted and the new MTU setting took. Normally when I go to open my browser for the first time it takes several minutes for the home page to load. When I use Firefox I often get a message that says the connection was reset while the page was loading. This time my home page opened immediately, no waiting. Any opinions on my RWIN setting would still be appreciated. |

Download DrTcp
Set Tcp Receive Window to 63888
Set Windows Scaling, Time Stamping, Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, Black Hole Detection to Default.
Leave Max Duplicate Acks and TTL Blank
Using the drop-down menu in The Doctor set your NIC’s (Ethernet adapter’s) MTU to 1492.
Save/Exit DrTcp
Reboot
Rerun the Tweak Test
Run Two Speed Tests from the two DIFFERENT cities nearest to you that are listed here: Speakeasy POPs
Also, test here »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512
Note your transfer rate after about 30 seconds. Then cancel the download.
Post the URL for the New Tweak Test. For the TWO Speakeasy Tests, Copy and Paste the speed results from those tests and note the speed from the FTP download test.

I did reboot on the original one, I don't know why the results came out the same. I'm confused about the MTU setting. When I did the dos command test, 1468 is the highest it could be before the files started fragmenting. I've gone in and reset router to 1492. Browser still hangs quite a bit, maybe there is something wrong with computer. I'm using verizon security suite, it seems to be very buggy and glitchy. Not to mention all the running processes it has going. After I cleaned out my pc using the guide on majorgeeks.com forums, the antivirus for verizon disappeared from my computer, very odd. |

| On the MTU test, you take the highest that you can ping through and add 28. This gives you your MTU. In your case that comes out to 1496 which is screwy. PPPoE use 1492. So you should have ping up to 1464.
Your tweaks are all fine as well as your speeds.
If you have browsing issues, it is not due to the tweaks.

| Thanks I'll give that a look. I meant to say my MTU is 1468 total. When I ran the test it involved a 28 sized packet. The highest number before fragmentation is 1440, add 28 to that and the total is 1468.
I switched from IE to Firefox and it didn't occur to me to change my cache size. It was only 50mb. Hopefully that will help a bit.
I do a lot of browsing on neopets, which is notoriously laggy. Maybe their server is crap. I wonder if it could be pinged to find out. |

| Ok I have something here that needs clarification. I'm really an idiot with this stuff.
I do know that I do not have a PPPoe connection. I see a lot of talk about DHCP servers in connection with PPPoe. Now I went into my router settings and I have the boxed checked that says "use router as DHCP server". I kept it that way because it says it's default and most people don't need to change it. The only explanation Netgear gives on that topic is this:
By default, the FVS318 router will function as a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server, providing TCP/IP configuration for all computers connected to the router LAN.
If another device on your network will be the DHCP server, or if you will manually configure all devices, clear the Use router as DHCP server check box. Otherwise, leave it selected.
I am confused by that statement lol. What does it mean? Does the computer I'm using need to be a DHCP server? All I know is I have regular DSL. I am always connected. I just click on my browser icon and go. |

| Each PC connected to the router has an IP address and other settings. There are two ways to do this: Static (you set the parameters) or DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) (where the router assigns the IP and the other parameters).
Unless you like fool to with this stuff, it is best to let the router do it.
Now PPPoE ... DSL comes in two flavors: PPPoE and PPPoA. The main difference is that PPPoE uses 1492 for the MTU (in 99.99% of the time in the USA). PPPoA use 1500 for the MTU.
AFAIK, VZ DSL uses PPPoE. The router can do this for you and you do not have to setup anything. In the router, there is a setting for it. You have to enter a user name and password. Is this how your router is setup?

| I think I misunderstood your question. My router I bought and added myself, that does have user name and password. It defaulted to 1500 MTU but I changed it. Verizon only sent me the Westell modem. I thought PPPoe required a program like winpoet to connect to the internet. |

| Yes, that would be correct for PPPoE and the MTU should be 1492.
The folks who used to be GTE customers (Western US) use DHCP and not PPPoE and the MTU is 1500.

| I looked through the FAQ and did what it said. I could not get online when I made those changes. That other stuff about ethernet card and Telco confused me. I don't know about the drivers, I installed verizon over the internet with the help of a tech. I think I may need to reinstall my OS and just start fresh. |

| One thing I forgot. I switched to Firefox because it seems to be slightly faster and I don't have to reboot nearly as often. Every time a page hangs and I'm waiting for it to load I see at the bottom of the browser, "transferring data from www.google-analytics.com". I've searched all through my pc and deleted every file I could find that had google in it. I don't now where that is coming from and if it has anything to do with my browsing issues. |

| There's a lot of interesting info on that. I'm really lost how to use that Hostman program. I didn't really know what a host file was before today and I don't know where to paste that code or how to make the host file read only. I see three icons when I bring up the program, I don't know which to click on. I read the help menu and I'm more confused than ever lol. |

| Well I didn't get anywhere with messing around with my host file but I think I figured out the google problem. It was firefox. I was just in my browser options when I noticed it has the box checked for checking sites that might be fake. One of the options underneath that says check by asking google for each site I visit. I turned it off completely. Those phishing filters are a nuisance and I never click on links to sites in emails, I always type it into the address bar directly. |
