| Long Haul Repeater
Small site | Main amplifier | Dispersion compensators | Self-contained DC power |
Here's a couple of pics from a long-haul system I also maintain... Huts are located every 60 mi or so; 4-5 amplifiers, then a regen site to clean the signal up; then repeat.
This gear is ~6 years old, and is capable of 16 x OC192/10Gig channels, and is being ripped out and replaced this year, for something faster... Scarey, eh? |

| said by AMD Phreak :Nice and clean shelter. Thanks - Since this one is easy to get to (can drive to it) - it get's maintained pretty well. I have one site that's hi-rail and helicopter access only. It's not as pretty... |

| said by Ricky Smith :hi-rail? Fiber is frequently run alongside railroads (long uninterrupted right of way). To access sites along the railroad that are otherwise not accessible by road, the railroad (and others) use what are called Hi-rail vehicles, which are basically a pickup truck or similar vehicle, fitted with drop down flanged steel wheels to allow the truck to drive on the railroad tracks.
There are a wide variety of hi-rail type vehicles, ranging from small track cars, to tractor-trailer rigs.

Actually - rodent damage to the exposed fibre-cable is fairly common - they naw on it; although I have no idea if that's because the plastic sheath is hard, and good for them to wear their teeth down on, or because they like the taste...
As for the 'mess' - as these are along rail lines, dust and film from the diesel exhaust, and dead flies are the biggest problems...
