New Install -- lost connection already

Just after a new install, tried to activate Internet Connection Sharing, and lost the connection altogether.

Am having a terrible time finding out on the web what rudimentary settings are for the NIC and Explorer browser. The tech left no manual or documentation of any kind.

At this point, TCP/IP on the NIC is just set to automatic detect, DHCP and DNS. Likewise, the Connection settings in Explorer are all set for automatic detect as well.

The NIC for the modem does show what looks like a external system IP address. The lights look normal on the modem.
Have powered down the modem, rebooted the computer. Nada.
Just get "Web Page Not Found."

Can anyone direct me to just the info on basic NIC and Browser settings?
