Power Issues - Cisco 871

Has anyone else out there noticed any power problems with the Cisco 871 router? I have noticed that when I power down my router for the night (I'm just currently using it to test things right now, it isn't on my home network providing any services) and come back to it to power it on, usually in the morning, it won't power on. Sometimes, I have to unplug the power supply from the unit to get it to power on, other times, I have to unplug the cable from the AC outlet and back again, other times I have to plug it into a different AC outlet to get it to come up.

The AC outlets are fine, I can plug the router back in after moving it to another location and it will power up. This has happened on surge protected ports, and UPS ports. The UPS ports isn't loaded as I have a 550W power supply with my computer and monitor attached and only using 118W of power with the computer, monitor, and router connected.

I'm thinking of opening a TAC case about it as either my AC adapter or router may need to be replaced but I figured I'd see if anyone here has come across this issue.

Cant say Ive ever experienced anything like that, and Ive dealt with hundreds of 870 series routers over the past two years. I have had to have a power supply replaced in the past though, but it was completely dead and would never turn on. Pretty good run so far.

I'd see if you can get the power supply replaced as it sounds more likely to be the culprit.

Yeah, I have a TAC case open. I will jump through those hoops since it is under warranty through my SmartNet contract. I'll post here their results and solution in case there is a greater issue then just a PS going bad.

i've actually had this issue several times when i've had to clean up my network equipment. usually this happens because of heat, as I have had it get a little warm. Can't say i've ever had an error like that when the router was "cold"...

i'd be curious to see what the results are.

Well, Cisco has decided to RMA the device. They shipped it yesterday and it arrived today (although I missed the shipment; I will pick it up today at the shipping office). Pretty good for 8x5, NBD SmartNet. They were quick with replying to my initial TAC request too. This was my first time using my SmartNet service personally (although at my old job, it was performed about a total of 2 or 3 times in the two years I worked there...as oppossed to everyone doing at least 1-3 each for Sonicwall RMA's...)

Anyways, I'll keep everyone posted on what Cisco finds out when I return my problem unit to them.

Mine does that to from time to time but I've never pursued it. I probable need to get a smartnet contract in the near future...

Well, they sent me a new one overnight and I've kept it on to see if I can recreate the problem but so far, it's working like a champ. I'm going to send the other one into Cisco and let them do their thing on it.

Service ticket created on April 28.

Troubleshooting emails exchanged on the 28th (I was at work and couldn't reply to one part of it).

RMA initiated on the 29th.

RMA unit arrived on the 30th.

I'm impressed.

Yes...yes it does.

Considering I have bottom of the barrel SmartNet coverage, I was thoroughly happy with the service I received.

Funny this thread came up because I had this same problem with an 851w. For the last couple months I did not have my 851w connected full time and sometimes after being off for 12 hours or more it would not power on unless I changed outlets and unplugged and replugged the power adapter in. Cisco swapped the router itself (not the power brick) under warranty and the issue went away.

Yeah, Ive been using mine with no problems although I haven't left it off for any extended periods of time because it's on my internet connection now. They swapped out both the router and the power brick in my case.

I am having a similar issue from time to time. I have about 300 871 routers that stay powered on and when we power cycle the equipment, power is not restored. What type of IOS is everyone using?

I am using c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-4.T4.bin

I was using that version as well as well as advanced security. I reverted back to advanced security to see if it was an IOS related issue. It wasn't. It seems to be a possible hardware issue with either the router, AC adapter (flimsy connectors, yet better then the ones the ASA 5505 come with), or a combination of both.
