| [Vista] What "Exactly" have you found wrong with Vista
I like Vista and use it everyday but I have found some items that need attention. I miss "select all" as a menu item, and with UAC enabled nothing can be stored in the "program files" folder other than programs(no data). What have you found? Note: I still like Vista |

| Ctrl-A still works (sorry, don't use the dialog menus if I can avoid it)
As far as no data in the Program Files, uh.. that would be a good (i.e. not annoying) thing. I can't recall how many people lost data because programs stored it IN the folders with the programs, and when they moved to another computer or reformatted, they lost that data because they didn't realize it wasn't in their 'My Documents' |

| reply to Dogblinkers You can put anything you want in Program Files with UAC on. All you need to do is give permission at the UAC prompt (assuming you have Administrator Privileges). Your post makes it sound like it can't be done, period... -- N.Y. Giants - Super Bowl XLII Champions |

@comcast.net | reply to Dogblinkers Sometimes you lose the ability to go up one folder in windows explorer. This happens usually at the 3rd or higher level, especialy when folder names are large. I HATE THIS! |

| reply to Dogblinkers Enforcement of "no data in \Program Files" is a good thing.
It's a multiuser system. Apps that put per-user data in not-the-user-profile causes crosstalk at best (or else you have to invent your own profile scheme in the wrong place), and causes privilege leaks at worst -- e.g. an unprivileged user can leave little traps for the administrator in the shared data file. |

| "Exactly"? Nothing. I have a few minor quibbles, and to be sure, there is always room for improvement. However, in a modern, properly configured system, it is stable, and not at all hard to work with.
My biggest complaint really, is that Vista is primarily an extension of XP. I do not recommend it to friends/associates/family as a needed upgrade for an already XP SP2 configured system...but, for a newly bought/built computer, I do recommend it over XP.
I do admit that I wish UAC was a little less annoying, although after awhile I've become accustomed to it, and really, it is just not that big a deal. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

| reply to Dogblinkers 1. No matter what I do it won't remember folder view settings. 2. The very handy "New Folder" button is not always present. 3. No matter what I do it won't remember the last window size for Explorer through a reboot. 4. It's slower than XP on the same hardware with very few benefits, and a number of crazy-making annoyances (1-3 and 5-10, for starters). 5. It, like XP, sometimes forgets my monitor orientation when the laptop goes in and out of the dock. 6. Extra clicks everywhere, like to get to the display settings to fix #5. 7. Integrated search is inferior to WDS for XP. There is no excuse for this. 8. Integrated backup tool is inferior to NTBackup. There is no excuse for this. 9. Restructuring of the user profile folders means running with hidden folders shown means I have to look at a lot of clutter in my user folder. 10. Bloat: Takes up much more room on the hard drive.
Really, Vista is not dying from a single bad feature, but from 1000 pin pricks of minor annoyances. The significant new features are most beneficial to large corps, but they can't afford to switch en-masse, and the SMB sector, which does roll over more often sees little benefit. |

| reply to Dogblinkers 1: When yahoo messenger locks up/crashes, it locks up Vista, I can't even start task manager and shut it down like I can in XP Pro.
2: I don't like the way the Vista Windows Explorer navigates, too many button clicks, it is hugely annoying. I'd rather navigate right from a tree rather than repeated drop down lists of each sub/super directory! It's aggrivating.
3: I can't find a way to run un approved driver run software, such as SiSoft Sandra's drivers (Vista 64).
4: The permissions system was set up dumb, they should have imitated Linux/Unix completely, and added all the permissions and ownership variables that the nixs have!
5: Icons are too large on main window. Side bar items are too large (some of them).
6: Huge annoyance: You STILL cant set Windows to open all Windows explorer windows to the same size, you have to stretch them and move fire name bar over/resize with every new individual window opening. They should have provided an option to make ALL settings persistent! -- You know your life has gotten "DICEY" when it turns into an episode of LOST, like my ex wife, who I swear is one of "The Others". | signmeuptoo you can change the size of the desktop icons if you hold down the control key and scroll with your mouse wheel. This bothered me too and really bugged me when my 2 year old made them big 'playing' with my computer and I had to google around to figure out what she had done, but they are nice and small now so maybe she did me a favour. |

| reply to Dogblinkers I have XP on my 2 computers. My son uses Vista. I have shown him how to keep it tuned up and running clean but it seems when his disk defragmenter is running it takes a very long time to finish. And it doesn't show the progress along the way.
Does your disk defragmenter seem to run slower on Vista? -- ...there will be an answer. let it be |

| reply to nemo1966 My only gripe is those that love to make generalizations without backing it up!
Actually, my main gripe about Vista is the fact it never save the folder type in explorer. I have a folder with many files and one picture yet Vista likes to think that the entire folder contains pictures and displays the stupid rating stars. Who knows, maybe there is a way to turn this feature off. I'm sick of reseting folders to the "All Items" option... |

| reply to nemo1966 Works just fine for me with one exception. When I unzip a file it takes forever. Im using the integrated zip app and havent tried a different one. Other than that Vista is rock solid and I never have any of the issues above. |

| reply to Dogblinkers In Vista, my computer refuses to boot up with a DVI video signal. I always have to unplug my monitor and replug it in in order to get video again. And even then, Vista insists that I am running a "Generic, non-PnP monitor" with a max resolution of 1024x768... It's a 1680x1050 monitor, for *expletive* sake!
UAC. I don't want to know just how to disable it. I don't want it *expletive* installed in the *expletive* first place!
Oh, and you just have to LOVE how Vista x64 won't install correctly if you have more than 2GB of RAM installed. |

| reply to Dogblinkers I have found nothing wrong with Vista, here's my take on Vista If your System is up to the job, and is at least newer than 1 to 2 yrs old, All versions of Vista should run just fine, but, if you are trying to run Vista on anything older than that, then do-yourself-a-favor DON'T.......you are better off running XP, so the bottom line here is, buy or build a new System and put Vista on that.........just my 2 cents...... -- Gateway MX6453 * AMD X 2 Duo Core 64 Mobile 1.6 GHz * 3GB * 667MHz* DDR2 Memory * Vista Ultimate OEM/DSP w/ SP1 |
