said by dsldude08 :Telco's are having a hard time competing right now because of regulations that don't allow them to change their pricing to compete in a timely manner, resulting in lost customers. Wow are people that thick headed? Really... Yep, they want to charge $500000 for caller id and now only charge $7 per month. When voip/cell companies include it for no extra charge.
Really . . . |

| I think what the other person is trying to say is that the telephone companies cannot raise or lower their rates right now overnight to compete with rates of non regulated companies. They have to go through the state commission which can take forever. |

| reply to jinjimbob The cable company, VOIP company, and so forth can raise their rates ANYTIME. And they have and will continue to do. The telco's can't just lower their price or change the price of something to please you, there is a regulation on everything and in order for it to be offered, changed, and so forth, it has to be approved. So, if this continues, then basically, the teclo's would disappear, and then your cable companies would be a monopoly and it starts all over again. Gee, is that what we want? | reply to bobgwen I guess their "free" ride is over, and they don't like it. That aside, let's just tax everything to death. -- BlooMe |

| reply to dsldude08 Residential line charge, Federal excise tax, Local communications services tax, State gross receipts tax, Telecommunications Relay Service, County 911 Funding Fee, Federal subscriber line charge are out of their hands.
Other charges like calling plans, other add-ons and invented changes like regulatory cost recovery fee are routinely changed and/or charged by the telcos.
The telcos don't like the fact the cable companies are doing it and charging less at the bottom line. Simply put they could charge less on the non-regulated side to compete with the cable providers, but they instead have taken a different approach. |

| reply to openbox9 hmmm.... having nationwide infrastructure paid for by tax payers is the definition of "free ride".
edit: that plus a legal monopoly.
can you see what it's difficult to accept any complaining from telco?? |

| The nationwide infrastructure wasn't paid for by tax payers. It may have been helped via tax breaks, regulation, and the government allowed monopoly, but I definitely wouldn't call it a "free ride". Nowadays, with the level of competition facing the telcos, I don't see why it's so difficult to accept any complaints. |
