[Philly] Nutter and city council pass gun control laws

So whats everyone's thoughts on these illegal gun control laws? Nutter and company are in violation of PA's Uniform Firearm Act, which is a class one misdemeanor. Think they will go to jail?

Have they really committed a crime? All they did was make a law. Is there some part of the UFA that prohibits making laws?

I think it's silly to make laws you know are unconstitutional, but I assume it's being done to force the issue into the spotlight. Lynn Abraham has already gone on record as saying she won't be enforcing the laws, so it's just a show.

I'm neutral on the whole thing. I appreciate the effort, but since it's effectively pointless, it's hard to get behind it.

Yes, there is part of the UFA that says it is a violation for a local municipality to try to install their own laws regarding firearms. And then it says that these violations are punishable by a first class misdemeanor. Its nitpicking since it won't happen.

I have major problems with the city tracking how much ammunition you purchase and the "assault weapon" ban. There's no reports of anyone using a legally purchased "assault weapon" in any crime in Philadelphia. Actually almost all the gun crime committed in Philadelphia is done by felons who can't purchase guns legally anyway. Instead of just enforcing current laws and keeping people behind bars, they pass feel good legislation that makes law abiding citizens into criminals.

people legally owning guns have a statistically incredibly less chance of maliciously shooting other people.

why would a crook planning on mugging someone or holding up a convenience store care if he gets arrested for robbery AND unlicensed firearm (which to my knowledge is often a misdemeanor anyway)

This "ban" won't save any lives. If Philly wants to stop violent crime, they should increase prison capacity and keep people behind bars for their whole sentence. Most of this violence is committed by people who should still be in prison. But building a prison will cost money that this corrupt government needs to squander elsewhere. So blame the evil looking guns and get some extra votes! Who cares if people die?

Looks like the hearing is delayed until May 19. Boy the editors of the local newspaper are up in arms about the NRA fighting this. After their first complaint I wrote a comment on their website that many of those laws proposed for Philly have already been enacted in MD and DC. In fact the laws are even more strict there. And I said that if those laws are such a good idea, then Baltimore & DC should be nearly crime free. But we know how well those laws work.

Gun control does not stop criminals, it only effects law abiding gun owners.
