[Wireless] New style Linksys WRT54G2 any good?

Does anyone have first hand experience with this wireless router? Is it a worthy successor to WRT54GS or WRT54GL? Thanks!

I'm not digging that internal antena idea. Maybe OK if you live in a small apartment or all your computers are in a small space or some similar situation.

Personally, that case reminds me of something from the 80's.

I've voiced my opinion on the newer design and I really don't care for them. No external antennas, not stackable and not very good looking. What was Linksys thinking? Did they send a survey out? Did customers respond to Linksys that they don't like looking at antennas on their routers?

What a joke!

I agree. The blue box is unmistakably Linksys. I don't know about the current "manta ray" like design. It looks like a POS.

Does not look good with such a low amount of ram and vxworks software.

I have one...set it up today to connect a Vista box to an XP where the Speedstream 4200 and the Linksys are located. It does work and was insanely easy to do. Distance between the two is only 25 ft but Vista says signal strength is excellent (does that have any value--I don't know). DSL service is 1500/384 and am getting this on the Vista box:

How much did you end up having to pay for yours. If I may ask.

$49.99 + tax..Best Buy. That was $10 less than the other choice that the floorperson wanted me to buy (Netgear). I didn't shop around.

My 2 bits:

As excited as I was when Cisco bought out Linksys in hopes that the Linksys products would be better, I have realized that the product line has generally gone downhill and I am unimpressed with the results.

That being said, I have had great luck deploying Cisco LAP1131AG access points from Cisco which have no external antenna and really just looks like a white spaceship with a colored glowing ring in the middle.

These APs are rock solid (I currently have two running of a PoE switch in my house) and I have had great luck with their coverage and performance (I work as a wireless deployment engineer for a very large Cisco partner [just for the sake of full disclosure]).

IF (and this is a big IF) the Linksys and Cisco wireless R&D people actually colaborated on this new design, I might be inclined to recommend this to several people who would have no business running third party firmwares on the router or could get by with the "micro" versions. However, in knowing the Linksys line since Cisco took over, I wouldn't hold my breath. I would actually need to test one to really see the benefit of it.

Sorry if this was is perceived as a hijack. I just went through this long winded post to actually prove a point that there ARE good internal antenna designs, and maybe this new WRT has some potential.
