Here you go in 2009. Verizon won't get franchise until END of 2008.

There is also no deadline for applicants, “the solicitation is non-exclusive and open-ended.” However, only Verizon is expected to seek a franchise. The company hopes to obtain one by year-end.
You are dealing with government - which means SLOW. City council OK'd this in 2006. The city admin delayed until now. And Verizon won't get its franchise agreement until year end.

I had 20/20 internet for about a week in Brooklyn. I upgraded last night to 50/20.

1.7GB test download, in 5 minutes, from Oracle was just sick.

Only $89 too.

Nice speeds and product for sure, but.... You pay over 3 times what I pay for my little 1Mb line.

Nice cheap price, but ... Natoma is paying a very small fraction of the price that you pay when you calculate bandwidth per dollar spent.

Screw Cablevision, Time Warner's gonna need more than fiber in their little commercial making fun of FIOS... they're gonna need Pepto Bismol because they charge more for less value... they're gonna be behind the 8-ball on FIOS when it comes to the NYC Time Warner buildings..

Time Warner is going to have to invest heavily in upgrades/price cuts to keep those customers because FIOS has the potential to steal them away in droves.

With the possibility of a franchise now near definite, they'll probably start deploying more fiber before then and just offer internet and phone until they get the right to offer TV, so they can offer that right away.

Jerk -_-, Just when I was getting excited over the Speeds and 'possible' availability you had to go and ruin it. I'm kidding though but it sucks we have to wait this long to get it I just want more upload. :/

Re: ...

Very true, and it translates into a fantastic internet connection. One I'd love to have were it not for the price. Getting more for the same price is nice too. My 1Mb line costs just a little over what I used to pay for dial-up. Perhaps before long they'll be throwing away piss-ant 10 Mb lines for $25/month. Roll on FIOS!

ISP's are working hard to create higher revenue connections. Like cable, who would like to give over a hundred more stations for only $30 per month, faster speeds are only "a little more." With premium cable, internet, and cell phone I could easily pay more for them than I do for my house. We're being eaten alive I tell ya!

Re: Uh Oh

And as they run to FIOS, freeing up bandwidth, and TWC cuts prices to keep those left, who knows, a TWC customer may end up being "the" place to be. Roll on FIOS.

FIOS is kicking Comcast's ass nicely in the Boston area. One of Comcast's techs who recently installed my Comcast Phone service told me he transferred down from the Boston area about one week before my install.

He said that Verizon is doing so well, the amount of routes that Comcast had available to service went from 1400 down to about 86. Comcast offered him the option to come down to Atlanta if he wanted to stay with the company.

My brother in law is also selling FIOS door to door in New Jersey. He said he signs up on average about 10 people per week (doing this part-time) who switch from Time Warner.

Comcast better take note. If Ma Bell is allowed to come back together and it is Verizon who takes over AT&T and the other Bells (Qwest?), its pretty much a done deal for Comcast and other cable ISPs.

Re: ...

When FIOS TV becomes available, we'll have phone, internet, and TV for $99 triple play. Looking forward to that.

Re: Uh Oh

VZ will be able provide FiOS internet to the masses of NYC before TV. The franchise agreement is only for TV, I believe. They are getting permits etc just to wire right now. Whoever said it would be awhile before anyone sees it was right.

$90/month isn't really bad for 50/20.. For people that need that type of bandwidth, that is an AMAZING deal. For your average person and even most geeks, 50/20 is just overkill when considering the expense.

Don't you just love the cableco commercials where they say "telephone company internet is 5-10X" slower than cable internet! Yeah, DSL!!! What a bunch of schemers! Then they say they have "always been fiber optic, the phone company is starting to talk fiber!!," Yeah, but if you can get 100% fiber vs a HCI hybrid network, FIOS wins!

The sad thing is that there are people out there that will believe this clever advertising and actually think FIOS is 5-10X slower than the average cable connection!

Those guys make a lot of money... I heard they make a $100/commission for each triple play. I know someone who works in NJ part time doing that also.. He also tells me that most of the salesman are scam artists.. The local cable company also is sending them around trying to recapture FIOS customers. LOL.

Consider that only a year ago I was paying $55 for 3mb/768k DSL connection, I think it's an amazing deal no matter how you look at it.
