wildblue users in SC, NC, or VA please help

I spent around an hour on the phone yesterday speaking to an upper-level techie at Wildblue (one that usually doesn't deal directly with the customers). Although he wasn't able to resolve my problem, he was "very intrigued" with my situation and stated that it may be the start of a larger problem. If you are a Wildblue user in South Carolina, North Carolina, or Virginia, would you please try to access the following web sites and report back here to let me know what happened:

When I try to access these sites, I get a DNS server failure error (I can access them at work, just not on Wildblue). The WB rep I spoke to was interested in hearing if anyone else has this problem.

Thanks!

The sites are not being found in the Riverside DNS server for Anik-F2 either:

nslookup dvdtalk.com
Server: vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net
Address: 12.213.224.61

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net timed-out

nslookup »www.carsdirect.com
Server: vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net
Address: 12.213.224.61

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net timed-out

nslookup autos.com
Server: vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net
Address: 12.213.224.61

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net timed-out

Switching to the Syracuse DNS server for Wildblue-1 (beam 125) produces mixed results:

nslookup dvdtalk.com
Server: vip-cdns.wb1.syr.wldblu.net
Address: 75.104.128.61

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: dvdtalk.com
Address: 67.201.16.154

nslookup »www.carsdirect.com
Server: vip-cdns.wb1.syr.wldblu.net
Address: 75.104.128.61

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to vip-cdns.wb1.syr.wldblu.net timed-out

nslookup autos.com
Server: vip-cdns.wb1.syr.wldblu.net
Address: 75.104.128.61

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: autos.com
Address: 12.129.202.205

Wildblue's DNS servers have been acting up since February 29, 2008, when they switched to Google Mail. For example, my.wildblue.net returns two IP addresses, 216* is valid and the other is bogus:

nslookup my.wildblue.net
Server: vip-cdns.wb1.syr.wldblu.net
Address: 75.104.128.61

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: my.wildblue.net
Addresses: 12.109.229.94, 216.126.204.65

Since mid December using the proxy in your gateway slows download speeds but using a proxy in another gateway restors the download speed to the advertised speed. Maybe the DNS servers have is bass ackwards too.

I found the same results on the Winnipeg DNS server for Anik-F2. Getting the same results with the proxy on & off using two different browsers. This not just a SC, NC or VA problem.

Dentam,

I have no problem in accessing those site you have posted with my Wildblue system the way I have it configured and configure. I can access them in about 15 sec. I am not using Wildblue services like – proxy, DNS, email, or optimizer.

Are you in the southeast or in WI? I will be emailing the rep a link to this thread on Monday and I'd like to have as many specifics posted here as possible. Thanks.

I'm in VA (Beam 37 Anik F2) and had no problem accessing these sites. I don't use the WB proxy, but I am using OpenDNS.

The Riverside proxy for Anik-F2 still does not resolve the address:

*** Request to vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net timed-out

nslookup -timeout=8 »www.autos.com
Server: vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net
Address: 12.213.224.61

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 8 seconds.
*** Request to vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net timed-out

nslookup -timeout=8 autos.com
Server: vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net

As a test to see if nslookup works:

Well I'm in TX but I can not connect to those sites.

The cars direct site does not surprise me that I can't access it as I can't access www.mustangforums.com which is a part of cars direct.

Come on WildBlue WTF?

If you are having trouble with these sites, it is important that you let wildblue know. They will try to tell you that its a problem with Vista or some other excuse. The only way I got any knowledgeable reply was by accidentally being transferred to an upper level support rep. They need to see a pattern of problems, just not one person.

By the way using Opendns solves the problem if I use Firefox.

those site time out for me also. I am in west Michigan. I had problems with other sites in the past also. I found out they were all hosted by godaddy. I changed my DNS servers and were able to get the godaddy hosted sites to work, but still no luck with the ones you have posted here.

All three sites listed in the OP are loading for me now. WB's DNS returns a different IP now:

nslookup cars.com
Server: vip-cdns.lax.wldblu.net
Address: 12.213.224.61

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: cars.com
Address: 216.33.88.141

I get to those sites just fine on loredo gateway, Spring Hope NC. I do however use a completely different DNS address than what WB provides I think. I do NOT use the stupid optimizer either.

12.189.32.61

I've been using that DNS address pretty much since I've had WB which is 2 years. I've never really had any problems getting to any site. I've gotten my advertised speed 90% of the time for both up and downloads. I've hit the download 80% threshhold once, but that was thanks to a new PS3 and 2 new vista ultimate 64bit gaming rigs I've built (lots of updates and drivers).
