It's also rumored that T-Mobile will be coming to Canada in 2009.

Personally, I hope they get the spectrum. I may be a little biased but nothing will stop MTS and other Canadian companies from raising rates in the future. |

| reply to Wolfie00 i have had no problems with Rogers wireless service in the 7 months i have had it, nor any real issues with the home phone, internet and tv service in the 2 months i have had it...when there was a billing issue, it was fixed on the spot and it was done on my time (CS is open 24/7). |

I have edited the title of the thread using "could" instead of "to".
it looks like the stakes are heating up:

1 edit | To be fair, Bell is in the process of being sold. I'm surprised the $180 million squeezed past the sphincter.
OTOH, Niagara Networks?

I hadn't realized that the only way to improve or expand a network was to bid like crazy at every spectrum auction regardless of what a company might already own. Having been large buyers in the past, perhaps they already have the spectrum they need, having purchased it previously so that they don't need as much from this action. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars -- Peart/Lee/Lifeson Join Team Helix

1 edit | reply to dirtyjeffer Yeah, but that link wouldn't open for me. The CBC one did.
As well, Bell only needs to 'deploy' spectrum in Ontario, Quebec, Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. The roaming agreement with Telus actually prevents Bell from lighting up thier own network in western rural areas. Same thing for Telus in the east. Which may explain why Telus was just above Bell in the list.
Maybe it speaks more about to the swiss cheese nature of Rogers network nationally that they have to spend so much money at this auction. The list can be spun anyway your bias points to. |

Having been large buyers in the past, perhaps they already have the spectrum they need, having purchased it previously so that they don't need as much from this action. that makes sense, however, with what is going on with BM lately, it says otherwise...a lot of areas are experiencing congested data networks due to a lack of capacity, to the point Bell has even dumped its unlimited data plans, cancelled customer accounts and kicked them out the door...and i am not talking about people doing 50 gigs on their devices, we are talking people doing less than 1 gig on their units, especially out west...it is to the point now, out west, they only offer a $100/250 MB data plan, which is a far cry from the $75 unlimited one they launched just a few months ago (now gone)...also, with everyone (all carriers) pushing content as part of the value added services, more capacity is crucial to a higher speed network...Rogers already has a decent amount of HSPA 3.1Mbps coverage, and 7.1Mbps is going to be started late this year...you need spectrum to maintain and expand, and Bell is barely maintaining it. -- -"I have tried to see things from your point of view, but no matter how hard I try, or what I do, I just can't get my head that far up my ass."

And, the reason why unlimited data in the West was pulled is because of how much the roaming rate Telus charges us. Regardless, it's a product which should not have been offered in the first place. There is no way it will ever be profitable for as long as there is a roaming agreement with Telus. |

The list can be spun anyway your bias points to. i remember the talk of Rogers "Swiss cheese network"...oddly enough, the only people who mentioned it (including myself before) where Bell employees...i can't speak for out west shaner, but around here, Rogers destroys Bells network in terms of coverage...the last year and a half at Bell, every second customer in the store complaining about reception was always mentioning how their "friend on Rogers had full service and never had reception problems"...it was one of the reasons why i signed up for a rogers phone when i quit Bell...i just had to know first hand what all the "hype" was about (they even have a bold advertising campaign bragging about their reception)...and i am not going to lie, their network is exceptional...i get signal everywhere my bell phone did, and everywhere it didn't...and while the EVDO speeds were king for a short while, HSPA is gaining ground quickly as its coverage footprint is expanding. -- -"I have tried to see things from your point of view, but no matter how hard I try, or what I do, I just can't get my head that far up my ass."

i don't know how this auction works...is it a blind auction, where they name how many "licenses" they want, and how much they are willing to pay, or is it like "car auction", where you have blocks of spectrum up for grabs and everyone starts bidding on them? -- -"I have tried to see things from your point of view, but no matter how hard I try, or what I do, I just can't get my head that far up my ass."

There's also been talk of Sprint wanting to enter the Canadian market, but with how horribly a shape they are in the US I doubt they'd be looking to expand, at least right now.
