So much for my streak of error-free bills...

After having had error-free billing with FiOS Internet/TV since installation back in December, February's had a new charge in it I'd never seen before - a $14.95 charge for "VOICEMAIL MNTHLY FEE" charged by "Enhanced Services Billing Inc."

I never asked for any voicemail services. Has anyone else seen this charge pop up out of nowhere on their bills? I dread having to call Verizon's billing dept. after some of the horror stories I've read here.

I've heard about the Enhanced Services Billing, Inc.- I don't believe they are actually affiliated with Verizon but are instead a scam organization. (Though I could be confusing them with someone else)

Less than a month ago, I received a telemarketing call from a fast-talking guy who said some stuff before I recognized the phrase "your telephone bill will not change" or so I thought he said. Red Flag Warning!

As best as I can now remember, he offered tech support for any technology in the office for a monthly fee that was to be billed through Verizon. Of course I firmly declined. "You are not authorized to bill any services to this number. This number is on the Do Not Call list, and if you're smart, you'll heed this first warning. Do not call me again." Click.

I called Verizon to inquire about third party billing, and yes, it can be done, thanks to the deregulation in 1996.

Concerned that someone could do that without my consent, I asked for and got from Verizon, an account freeze that prevents just such unauthorized third party billing.

I don't think it applies to 900-number billing, you have to get a 900-block for that. Not worried since I don't call those numbers anyway, and I refuse to allow my cat access to the phone. The TV remote is bad enough.

My intention is to only pay for Verizon services on my phone bill. Period.

Thanks for the tip - I just did the same [and there's no fee involved, it's a service Verizon offers].

This is a charge not associated with Verizon in any way. They are simply the billing agent for these companies. When you call ask Verizon to add a bill block to your account. It is free and it stops any company (other than Verizon) to add charges to your account. It is up to the company in question to actually credit the charges although Verizon will place a hold on the amount so you don't accrue late charges till the issue is resolved. I would also like to add that I think the customer service is awesome at Verizon. They bent over backwards with me to resolve an issue I had which actually was a billing error with their system. They didn't try to deny that there was a problem and did everything possible (and more) to resolve it as quickly as possible. If you treat their agents with respect they return it to you ten fold. I will never switch! FIOS is the most awesome new technology there is.
