Can phone calls be made over an air card connection?

Is there a way to make phone calls over the air card?

Other than VOIP, no. It's a data card, not a phone.

well, sure...I use Skype daily and it is NOT VoIP. Any number of services will work as long as your connection is reasonably stable.

Like I say I use Skype between 3-6hrs daily while the better half is in Seattle & Spokane. We actually have MORE probs connected on DSL than on EVDO. Lately I have even just been using my new Nokia N800 internet tablet to make the calls. Works like a dream.

Cool. I figured there was a way. But Skype is not exactly what I want (still have to read throught all the user manual). What would be really nice is to be able to connect a phone via a rj45 port like ISDN is set up to do (where all the house phones were connected via the internet connection). Then I could really benefit from the Mobile Broadband connection by making it do double duty as my phone and internet connection.

I'll look further for a device that connects to the router then to my house phone line so everything stays as it is.

Thanks!

You can hook magicjack up to your regular base house phone and it works just like a regular phone. (magicjack USB into computer, telephone cord into magicjack and into your base telephone) Rings in and calls out.

Only thing Ive found with magicjack is its a bit temperamental with some antivirus programs. So you just have to tinker around with it a bit.

Magic Jack sounds like a neat product. But if you were to have it as your primary source of phone service, it requires a PC to be on 24/7 because it connects via USB.

But I did find that Linksys (and others) make Analog Telephone Adapters (ATA's) that connect to a router via RJ45 cable, and only require the router and your network connection to be on 24/7. They also give better quality sound and multiple lines.

If I change the router config to never time out if it would keep connection well enough to serve as primary phone service?

If my air card timed out, would an incoming call make the air card auto connect?

Would Sprint have an issue with my service being connected 24/7?

Also, I wonder if Magic Jack will configure to these ATA's so I can get the $20 yearly phone expense.

These issues would have to be worked out 100% before VOIP could be used as primary phone service. My land line now runs $75/mo or $900.00 a year for unlimited service. Eliminating that expense would be a nice savings. Especially when the cost of everything else (gas, food, heat, etc) keeps going up.

My PC at home is online all the time. If I don't use connection manager, it doesn't "time out", but I don't use the router.

Offtopic, how do you like your Cyfre amp?

It works very well, especially with the panel antenna. And the tower is 5 miles away over hill and trees. It is on 24/7, and the router is setup to disconnect after 20 minutes of non-use. It hasn't given me any trouble, and it really made the gain steady at -75/76 when before it would float around from high 80's to low 90's.

I think the best thing I can say for it is its very consistant. It does what its supposed to do and I never think about it. Now the router lists the signal strength as "excellent". I would have to agree.

Most any VOIP equipment does what you're talking about, always has too as far as I can remember. You plug a VOIP modem into a ethernet port and the phone line into a jack in the wall.

Skype IS VoIP: »www.skype.com/help/guides/voip/
They do use their own proprietary peer-to-peer based VoIP protocol, but it's still VoIP.

Based on the OP's question, I think you got my point.

As suggested Skype is going to be about your only option. You cannot make voice calls "from" the EV-DO AirCard.

Rawgerz,

MagicJack is not that way. You plug magicjack into your usb port on your computer, then plug a phone cord into the magicjack then directly into your choice of phone.

You do not use any wiring from your landline to use magicjack.

So yes your computer must be on all the time to access/call but another way around this and what I have done...I got a grand central number (free) I give out that number and it calls my magicjack, cell phone or where ever I am with just a couple of clicks. So I do not have to leave magicjack on all the time if not needed. Unless I want to make outgoing calls and not use my cell minuets

But I have free incoming calls on my cell phone so it works wonderfully for my business calls as my private cell phone number is not shown.
