How long until I can get 7mb service in my area?

Seems like everyone else is getting it but me. been waiting for about half a year now. Qwest says they're working on it but doesnt seem like it to me =0

Your probably on a RT (remote terminal) like me. We need to be closer to a CO (central office). I personally don't expect anything great to happen anytime soon. Maybe if they deploy FIOs. But thats years away.

You probably have a 1.5 meg line. Be happy. Some people are still stuck with 256/256 like me.

Edit: I've been waiting over 2 years just to get bumped to 1.5 meg

Games don't even come close to 1.5Mbps
The most they use is 80kb up 80kb down see for your self

Play a game on a pc and download this tool. »www.analogx.com/contents/downloa···/nsl.htm

Do you host games.

This is true, typically games don't use very much bandwidth. (Though IIRC some Xbox games are somewhat worse than PC games.)

Some exceptions are if you host the games (then you need to worry about upload bandwidth as much as download bandwidth), or if the game has voice communications built into it (since it can then be thought of as: a game + VIOP).

My foggy recollection is that Halo needs closer to 256Kbps than to 64Kbps.

No your getting confused with the upload settings on XBOX for hosting games, it has a 256 and 512 and so on depending what your upload speed is.

I run a server also host games all the time one of my PC's at home hosting 24-7, playing games has not changed over the years there is 3 main things players XYZ coordinates, game speed, number of players, with pc or xbox.

Your graphics are not being passed over the net and the game designers tailor the packets and game speed for the Internets ability to loose packet's also PING time toleration, not your bandwidth at your modem.

Data has to be fast and consistent as in ping you cant send lengthy packets for gaming

The host has to send the lengthy data each XYZ coordinate you receive from each player has to be sent back to each player, if there is 8 players i receive about 200kbs download and upload is 720kbs on UT3 and it does not mater if XBOX is connecting to me.

Yeah, with my connection, I can barely play xbox live games. Halo 3 is fine with my 256k line. Its just when my room mate starts surfing the web is when I lag. I have the dgl-4300 with QOS and it doesn't help out with my slow of a connection.

Nope, I've never seen the settings you're talking about. (I may be confused, but that isn't the source. )

From what I'm seeing Xbox uses less bandwidth than a pc, this makes sense xbox does not have near the power of a modern pc.

he's thinking of halo on the PC, not xbox. pc version allows you to set your upload 256/512/greater

If by "he" you are talking about me, again no. I've not seen the PC version of Halo (other than as a topic of a review that I didn't read).

I think it may have been from when the Xbox first came out and there wasn't a way play Halo except on a LAN and GameSpy came out with a way to play over the internet through one of their programs and they were recommending 256Kbps per player... (like I said its only a vague recollection, so that may actually be wrong too).

To stray back onto topic here...
If you are downloading at the same time you are playing a game on a 256Kbps connection it will almost certainly ruin a game playing experience, regardless of the game. Having a 7Mbps connection does not completely protect you from that (people can still download at 7Mbps while you are trying to play your game). Yes 7Mbps would probably be better though.
