With that being said I'm betting most officers would let it slide and at worse tell you it's against the law and have you remove it from the windshield.
I have my GPS mounted to the windshield. I figure it's less dangerous to have the GPS tell me where to turn rather then me looking off to the side of the road at every street sign rather then watching the road. But also, while my GPS is mounted on the windshield, it's also low enough that it's touching the dash so it only blocks my view about 1" above the bottom of the windshield (really nothing). |

Whenever anyone says "talk to bureaucracy XYZ, surely they know their own laws/codes" I can't help but recall the experiment someone conducted with the IRS years ago where they asked multiple IRS phone reps the exact same question and received the wrong answer at least 1/3 of the time.
And you'd better believe that anyone who screws up a tax return has no recourse if they did so as the result of bad information from the IRS itself. Likewise with you and anything you do/don't do after having a chat with the DMV. |

Then again most don't put it right in front of there face, but down low over the the middle to the right side of driver... not really blocking any line of sight. (Like where the rear view mirror is on the high side.)

New Jersey law says different. They restrict non-transparent signs from blocking the driver's view. Transparent materials are OK and any sign in the rear side windows that doesn't interfere with the driver's view is OK.
Windshields must be unobstructed and equipped with cleaners
Every motor vehicle having a windshield shall be equipped with at least one device in good working order for cleaning rain, snow or other moisture from the windshield so as to provide clear vision for the driver, and all such devices shall be so constructed and installed as to be operated or controlled by the driver.
No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, sticker or other non-transparent material upon the front windshield, wings, deflectors, side shields, corner lights adjoining windshield or front side windows of such vehicle other than a certificate or other article required to be so displayed by statute or by regulations of the commissioner.
No person shall drive any vehicle so constructed, equipped or loaded as to unduly interfere with the driver's vision to the front and to the sides.
