| [DSL] Router loses internet connection when enabling Wireless
Hi,
My old man has signed up for the AOL offer in the UK where you get the Inspiron l500 laptop running Vista and up to 8Mbps broadband with a Netgear DG834G modem/router.
He's had the activation letter and I've installed all of the ADSL filters to the phone lines and run through the setup disc with the laptop connected by the Ethernet cable.
All goes well until you get to the Wireless set up bit where it fails.
I've looked in the router settings through 192.168.0.1 (admin/password) and can see that it has set up the correct screen name etc and from looking on various forums I've run through a manual setup of the router - checking MTU, VCI etc etc, I can test the line and it connects and I can surf the net.
The problem I'm having is that when I go into the router settings and tick the box for enabling the wireless (I've set the SSID and WPA stuff)and then click apply I get the wireless icon on the router go solid green as expected then the "i" on the router disappears for a minute and then comes back flashing orange then back to solid green, after another minute or so this repeats. The laptop is still attached via the Ethernet cable and I've not yet configured the laptop via wireless to the router.
AOL haven't been much help, telling me to ring Dell which I haven't as I don't see it as a problem with the laptop (I've also tried it on my own wireless network and it works fine)
It seems strange that as soon as the wireless is turned on at the router it keeps dropping the internet.
Sorry for the essay but I'm usually ok with medium techie stuff but am really stumped with this.
Any help greatly appreciated. |

You cannot have both connected at the same time, Suggest you disconnect the lan cable and then enable the wireless.
Its an either/or connection not both. |

| reply to Bill_Oddie I haven't connected the laptop through wireless though, all I've done is enable the wireless function on the router.
I don't get as far as unplugging the ethernet cable then searching for wireless networks and connecting as the internet won't stay up.
I see a solid green power light, wireless symbol and number 1 but the "i" keeps flashing orange then solid green and repeating. |
