I think that hardcore data users are a small minority of their customers. Most people who go to a cell phone company want to be able to make and receive calls. From what I have heard of Sprint, they are not very good at this particular sport.
I didn't think there were that many data users either, much less enough users sucking up enough bandwidth to cause that significant an impact.

You're close on your assessment of their calling service. More to the point though is how poor they are at customer service (remember those pesky "problem customers" they axed?), and more specifically billing concerns.

Relatively speaking, their data service is pretty good.
