Re: AntiVirus Poll 2008

AVG Free... however, I don't really like the current version (8). Seems bloated... Link Scanner, eg.

It seems to work, though... periodic scans with other AV haven't turned up anything missed by AVG.

I was an Avast user, but it kept messing up my speedtests (it would cause it to turn on and off rapidly, which would distort the end results)..not to mention it uses up a decent amount of memory (not a big deal though, for me).

I recently switched to AVG--no speed-test mess-ups, and it has a smaller footprint.

I don't need to use any anti virus. I'm running Linux. All that aside for my windows PC I use NOD32 suite. Great program, excellent customer support and to date no problems.

To the comment way back from sailor See Profile about the nag screens from the Kaspersky trial version, I've been using it for about four days now and, as he has no doubt discovered, the nags pretty much go away after the first day or so. I'll probably run the trial for the duration and if I have no issues I'll buy it. The fact that it found several trojans that Symantec Corporate 10 had let through, and fixed them, is plenty reason enough for me buy it.

I've used NAV for many years and SAV for the last few, and am really impressed with Kaspersky. My only issue with KAV so far is it tries to be extremely protective and some things may have to be tweaked to prevent it interfering with stuff -- many might find this to actually be reassuring. In particular it likes to monitor network traffic and some applications may need to be put in the Trusted Zone and traffic monitoring turned off for those apps to prevent slowdowns or side effects or spurious warning messages. But other than these small tweaks I've been very happy with it so far. After what happened with Symantec I don't feel I can ever really trust it again!

Actually I use three different products. I use KAV on 3 systems, Nod32 on my 2003 server, and McAfee (courtesy of Comcast) on our extra computer.
