[trouble] DSL dryloop

Verizon DSL team plays horrible games with its DSL customers, if they change their service from fixed phone line to VOIP. I had a Verizon DSL together with Verizon fixed phone line untill recently. Then I decided to change my fixed line to VOIP from another company. The VOIP company promises to take care of everything, including transfers. Everything worked well for ten days, and during the time I used my voip phone. Then everything died on second saturday. It took me 6 hours on my cell phone, calling different people from sales, billing, tech support, Elitte tech support, consumer sol, and customer retention. After opening ten different tickets, finally someone gave me the full story. I had to reorder my service again, with higher rates, and reenable dryloop. It will take them ten days to have my DSL restored. It is considered normal new customer process. Verion knows this very well, and still lets the customer go through this. They are letting DSL die first, and then reinitate the process on customer complaint.

You OK'ed the VOIP company port the number at your request which caused Verzion to cancel the line, what partof this is Verizons fault?

It is YOUR responsibility to switch to dry BEFORE you cancel ...

Not true. I got dry loop 2 years ago automatically by porting my phone number from Verizon to Vonage. There were many posts on this topic 2 years ago regarding the proper procedure to do this, and the fact that Verizon often screwed up and disconnected DSL instead of converting it to dry loop. One of the gotchas was that people were supposed to convert their Verizon method of payment to automatic billing by credit card before doing the port. I don't remember if there were any other requirements, other than checking that dry loop was available in the area in question before doing the port.

Edit: Back then, the automatic port was the ONLY way to get dry loop, since Verizon didn't offer it explicitly.

Edit: Here's one of the early threads. I think the earliest threads were in May 2005 but I can't get the search to go back that far.

»Verizon Dry Loop is Available?

Edit: Here's what I think is the earliest thread mentioning Verizon dry loop DSL.

Also, more than 2 years after my automatic conversion to dry loop, I'm still paying $29.99/month for DSL (1-year contract) without the extra $5/month normally associated with dry loop. I'm wondering whether Verizon's billing system has problems with increasing the DSL bill when the port is automatic, and if the "problems" with automatic porting could be deliberate, to get people to explicitly switch to dry loop first so they can be billed extra. I've heard that POTS and DSL are handled by two separate divisions. Is this plausible?

Hi there,
Sorry to hear about your trouble making the switch. I made the same transition from Verizon Phone/DSL to Vonage/Dry Loop DSL in November '07 and didn't have any trouble. I think the key was to switch Verizon DSL billing method to credit card before my number was ported to Vonage. I found the threads Andre2 cites in his reply and can say that this still works.

has this been resolved yet? you need to place this request in the official dsl support forum - Verizon Direct
you'll get better help there. there is a re-connect process which you should have been taken through which would resolve this much faster.

Did they raise your DSL bill $5/month to the standard dry loop rate?

Okay, so I too am looking to switch to dry loop since I essentially don't use my POTS service anyway. I just switched my billing to credit card from my phone bill...what are my next steps?

I intend to wait a month or two and ensure that the CC payment is set up correctly. Then, do I just call the business office and ask for the switch, or do I need to call VOL and ask them to do something?

I'm in NYC and I believe that VZ offers dry loop here. Any advice you could bring to bear on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

it depends on what you're doing. if you intend to go to a VoIP provider then you need to contact that provider to do the switching. if you do not intend to have phone service at all then you need to contact the verizon business office and request the conversion to dry loop.
