| [Tomato] Recommended settings for WRT54GL with Tomato 1.13
Just replaced a DI-624 (I was fed up with the constant rebooting) with a WRT54GL.
I would appreciate some help with some of the settings.
First rather than using the actual DNS server addresses in the ethernet adpaters TCP/IP properties, I would like to use the WRT54GL ip instead. But if I use the WRT54GL address I loose the internet connection. Is there a setting I need to change in Tomato?
Second what settings do you recommend for the wireless? I understand it possible to boost the signal strength a bit, with the DI-624 the signal has always be inconsistent.
Security wise is there any default settings that needs to be modified? I am using static DHCP and Wireless filter to only accept the laptop mac address. |

Set your ethernet adapters to "obtain DNS automatically" and your machines should use the router as its DNS server. You can check to see that it is by opening a command prompt and typing "nslookup google.com".
Security wise is there any default settings that needs to be modified? WPA2-PSK, or the highest grade of encryption available on your wireless devices. MAC address filtering is a bad security practice (virtually useless). |

| reply to Fab Thanks noping, I was using WEP but I will move to WPA2-PSK.
I had originally setup the ethernet adapters to obtain IP and DNS automatically, but while the local network worked fine I wasn't able to connect to internet without entering the actual DNS servers.
Also I have a problem with the wireless settings, my laptop DWL-G650 use 80% cpu when the WRT54GL wireless is set to 802.11g or mixed. Using no security, WEP or WPA makes no difference. Updating the DWL-G650 to the latest atheros driver also made no difference. If I set the WRT54GL wireless to 802.11b cpu usage then comes back to normal. Note that this is only occurring with the WRT54GL, the DI-624 was set to 802.11g and I never add any issue with the DWL-G650. |

| reply to Fab Not sure what was wrong with the Tomato firmware but upgrading to dd-wrt.v23 SP2 solved most my issues.
DHCP is now working and the DWL-G650 cpu load decreased to 15% in 802.11g using WPA2-PSK. Any idea what settings I could change to further decrease the cpu load?
Also do I need to set up static ip for port forwarding? |

| reply to Fab Resolved the DWL-G650 issue when I realized the cpu load was linked to the wireless channel used. Channel 11 - 80% Cpu load Channel 6 - 40% Cpu load Channel 1 - 3% Cpu load
Is that a normal behavior for PCMCIA Wifi cards or is it specific to this card?
Back yo my originals questions, what settings should I change to improve the wireless signal quality and is there any Firewall or security settings I should change? |
