Don't buy Western Digital Hard Drives

Or for that matter any hard drives distributed in US. Order overseas and have shipped if this is an issue for you.

IT is for me because what I do with my hard drive is my business. If I want to break the law than that is my choice to make, not Western Digitals.

There are also some legal uses that this technology might prohibit. No thanks, will stay away from WD.

Sad thing is most people buy their computer pre-assembled so how will you know?

While I agree with you, the US judicial system doesn't quite. See references to Napster, Limewire, Grokster, Bittorrent, et al.

I agree. I spend my cash on something, I will use it how I please and no software would stop me.

Agreed! Consumer trust is gone.
Western Digged their own grave with this treachery as far as this buyer's dollars are concerned.

I didnt see such indignation on these forums when it was proven that comcast was blocking torrent. All people have to do is NOT install the optional software and the drive is like any other normal drive. Big deal.

  Isn't it pre-installed though?

I think it does come with the anywhere access software installed. It is not installed on your local OS.
WD gives instruction on how to use the drive without the mionet software.

"Can a WD My Book World Edition hard drive be used without using WD Anywhere Access?
Question
Can I use a WD My Book World Edition hard drive without using WD Anywhere Access?
Answer
A WD My Book World Edition hard drive can be accessed and used for Local Network access (LAN) through SAMBA connectivity methods without using The WD Anywhere Access program.
If data has already been added to shares on the drive using WD Anywhere Access (MioNet), this data will need to be copied or transferred to the internal computer's drive(s) or other SAMBA shares BEFORE MioNet is to be disabled or uninstalled. Data contained in shares under MioNet's control will not be accessible if the program is uninstalled. Once you've moved the data from the MioNet protected shares to the internal computer or another location, you can proceed creating SAMBA share(s) on the drive."

Sorry now Im changing my mind again after reading the quick install instructions say you must install the anywhere access, but it runs on Linux, so that isnt true
Going to read the full instructions and then edit this.
Thats what I get for repeating things i read on /. without verification.

Ok, it is unclear wether it is installed on the drive, it doesnt matter, theres a web interface preinstalled and the root name/password is "The default user name is admin and the default password is 123456"

So you would be able to setup Samba shares without having to install that software on your computer.

The web interface is independent of the service, mac users cannot use the mionet software so they configure it that way. Apparently there are hacks to make it a server since it has its own ARM processor. And its all GPL opensource, the source is at the WD site.

They have 2TB My Books now, think I'll get a 1 tb when the prices go down.

Found the "modification" site >> »mybookworld.wikidot.com/hacks-and-howto

If Martin did not know what was inside the box, I don't know. I is however noticable he has opend it and posted some internal info before he created the the ssh hack by looking at the dates he posted information about the box. It is not that hard to hook up and mount the disk by use of sata cable. (the nasty part is opening and closing the box without damage ) The best part is that Martin found a security flaw in the firmware upgrade functionality that can be used to hack the box and own it. Fundamental for easy hacking. I think many people are very happy with that work. Now let's make it better then WD wants."

Lol they already have a lot of linux server functionality working, and an eggdrop IRC server. They are saying it hangs on large files for the bittorrent server.

There never was any consumer trust.

The difference today is that "business" can do something about it... not that I think their efforts are worthwhile.

So to use your analogy, the RIAA and MPAA can sue WD, Dell or any other hardware maker or reseller for that matter unless they take steps to stop piracy, rather than the sites you mention who actively facilitated it.

That's what the ehtertainment "industry" would have you believe.... ain't it shit?.... however if any of the Hardware/Middleware/resellers/OS/etc. wanted to they could challenge the shills and win with little effort. Problem is, Ol' Billy Gates wants to get into entertainment too, so he's trying to pad the books and fix the game BEFORE he even enters.... by him programming M$ Windoze, he quasi-forces hte HW/MW folks to capitulate...

Since when is Gates the devil in this story? Yeah the part about mpaa getting a part of zune revenue... But how about Jobs wanting you to pay to be able to rip YOUR OWN dvds to an iPod?

In the end the real devil is the MPAA/RIAA

LOL, I beg to differ, if theor drives were like others they would happily back them with a 5 year warranty...1 year on a hard disk drive is pathetic....but givem my past experience with them they are likely to faul before that time anyway.

My WD drives have at least 3 year warranty. I just bought them earlier this year. If you want a longer warranty then buy a drive with a longer warranty. WD does offer them.,

I have never had a WD drive fail. I have a closet full of old ones that never died. On the other hand, I also have several Maxtors in the closet all of which died. This is going back 20 years.

My choice is clear.
