[Wireless] BEFW11S4 Speed

Hi Guys,

My broadband speed when I connect wired directly to my modem is 100mbps.

When I'm running my linksys wireless BEFW11S4 to the three pcs the best I get on any one is 11mbps. So, is that down to me not selecting the correct settings in the router, the wireless network cards or they're settings, a poor router, or is this normal?

Thanks Alot

Vince

Hi Vince,

Your router is only rated at a theoretical wireless BW of 11 mbps. In real life 802.11b routers usually only see about 5-6 mbps of actual throughput. So if you're getting 11 it is essentially a miracle. Praise the lord!

Edit: I just reread your note. I don't think any provider is offering 100 mbps, so there is something kerflooey in your whole measurement process seems to me.

if you are referencing the little pop-up bubble in the system tray in the bottom right of your screen when you are wired, that just means your network card is 100mb and the LAN port on the Linksys is 100mb. It doesn't mean anything more then that.

If you are wireless, at best on a BEFW11S4, mousing over your connection in the system tray will show 11mb and not 100mb. That's because 11mb is the "speed" for a 802.11b connection which is what the BEFW11S4 provides. You only get a max of 1/2 of that 11mb, so you shouldn't see any speed past 5500mb.
