I just received my SA 8300HDC DVR last night, and I have Time Warner Cable. I notice that it has two 1394 (firewire) ports, and one SATA port. The manual mentions that the SATA port is for adding additional capacity, but it doesnt mention what the firewire ports are for. So I have two question for everyone.
Assuming I attach an additional hard drive (via SATA), is the content encrypted so that it can only be played by the SA8300HDC? What format is the data recorded in, and can it be played with WMP? Can I connect an iPod (for instance) to the firewire port and record directly to that? How about a firewire hard drive, will that work? -- я люблю Денди! |

| reply to wifi4milez I've read somewhere an external SATA drive is recognized by the box, and once connected it formats it to work only with the box it's connected to. You can't swap it out to another box to watch the recorded content, if you try it formats itself to the new box and erases what ever is already there. You can't hook it up to a computer to try and copy/burn the stored content either. I'll see if I can find a link... -- ~Help Find a Cure for Cancer~ ~Proud Member of Team Discovery ~ |

| reply to wifi4milez They have two different types of programming for the SA8300HDC, SARA and Passport. TW uses Passport which doesn't allow an external SATA hard drive (TW bastards!) | reply to wifi4milez The Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HDC and/or the software that runs on it sucks. No amount of money per month is worth this piece of crap. It crashed on us twice this week (no way to change channels or do anything- tried pressing all of the buttons and ended up having to pull the power plug out of the back to get it to work). This may coincide with it trying to end a recording. In addition, for the last few weeks even though there is hard drive space on it, it was not letting us record anything. We tried deleting a ton of stuff on it which it let us delete but it would not schedule new recordings (even single show recordings). Finally Time Warner in general sucks and/or this box because almost every time we've gone lately to try to use on-demand, it doesn't work at all (it waits for a second and then says on-demand is not available). Time Warner's response to our calling? Unplug the box for 2 minutes and replug it in. That didn't work. After that we called back, waited on the phone 20 minutes with Time Warner before hanging up. Time Warner sucks. If Tivos were so dang expensive I'd want one. All I can say is STAY AWAY FROM THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE. I absolutely can't wait until there is some decent competition in the home entertainment business. This cable monopoly crap is the reason for piece of crap boxes like this to exist. |

| reply to wifi4milez Apparently if your new box is running TWC's in house designed menu system called "Mystro", the firewire ports are active. See this thread for an example..»[TWC] 8300hdc dvr firewire
