I would not mind it if it was not filled up with useless and worthless ads but the chances of that happening NONE

I don't mind it. If I mistype an address and it helps me find it, that's all that matters.

Except that the internet is not just the web.

DNS has a purpose. Returning a failure code for a non existent domain is a requirement for DNS. Verizon breaks this.

Exactly, I was about to post the same.

The only acceptable solution is to provide an option of DNS that works correctly for customers who need it. The "web only" people can default to the false-results scam and those who prefer true DNS would be given an address of an un-tampered DNS server.

Would you feel any better about this if the "DNS tinkering" only kicks in on queries for names that begin with 'www.' and are of the 'A' record type?
