| Question about Wave Phone and fax machines.
Hi all,
We just got Wave's Phone service about 3 weeks ago (along with Digital Cable and internet)
Since we've had their phone service we cannot get our fax machine to work (it worked fine when we had Quest). So I called a Wave Tech who told me to try a fax machine that will work with 'voice over IP phone' and it should work, but that their phone service is so new that they can't guarantee that it would.
I talked to Staples and they could not find any of their fax machines to specifically say voice over IP and didn't know what to tell me about that, but said that I could try the one I was looking at to see if it would work (which is an HP Officejet 6310 Color Flatbed All-in-One), and bring it back if not (I'm willing to try it, my fax machine is 6+ years old anyways).
My Question is, does anyone know what a good fax machine to get is, that will definitely work with Wave's Phone. Is there anything else I should look for? What is the best one to get? Has anyone else had this problem?
I do not want to cancel and go back to Quest, I like the bundle, but will if need be.
Any help is greatly appreciated, Thank you!

| Your fax machine should work fine on Waves service. Where is the fax machine? In the same room as the EMTA? Are you using the phone jumper that came with your fax Machine? If you try using a normal "2 pair" phone jumper you may run into problems. It can actually cause a short to your telephony device. I would suggest using the phone jumper that came with the fax machine. If you look closely at the RJ11 connector (the end of the phone jumper) you'll see the one that came with the fax machine only has 2 wires. A normal phone jumper has 4. Also if your polarity is reversed it may cause your fax machine to not work properly. If location permits I'd simply try to plug the fax machine directly into the EMTA with the jumper provided and try to send and receive a fax. (this will kill dial tone to every phone outlet in the house until you put it back the way it was). If you have a monitored alarm system I would suggest not messing with it. If you take dial tone away from the alarm system the cops may show up at your house . . . -- The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson |

| Yes the fax machine is in the same room as the EMTA. No I was not using the Phone Jumper that came with the machine, because it was too short to reach the EMTA. I just tried using the jumper that came with it, putting the fax onto the floor and it still does not work. I used my cell phone to call the fax, and the fax does not ring. You're right the jumper that came with the fax has 2 wires and the one I was previously using has four.
Thank you for your suggestion though, it is appreciated! |

| Try dialing your number with the fax and see if your cell phone rings? Were you direct to the EMTA or did you use a phone splitter? Using the splitter incorrectly can reverse your polarity and cause problems. Unfortunately some of the EMTA's come stock with the polarity reversed. Unless you have a way of testing the polarity you'll never know if it's backwards. Also if you have voicemail active and it picks up first you'll never get a fax. Does the fax machine have an output right next to the input that you can plug a phone into? If so try plugging a phone into the fax machine and see if it rings. If you only have one phone number make sure your plugged into the top line card/phone port. The other port is for line 2 and will only work if you have a second number provisioned to it. I know it's a lot of info and things to try but, it should work if configured correctly. Hope the info helps out. If all else fails I'd schedule a Trouble Call. -- The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson |

| reply to CSG Okay, I tried dialing my cell number with the fax, and the cell phone does not ring. No I did not use a splitter at all, I was direct with the EMTA. I unfortunately don't have a way of testing the polarity though(I don't think this would be it because the phone line does work). I don't have voicemail, so that's not the problem. No, I don't have the kind of fax that has an output next to the input. Yes, only one phone number and I have it plugged into the top phone port.
Well, it seems I have tried everything you said without any luck. It looks like I will have to schedule a service call. Thanks again!

| reply to CSG This is a good article why its so difficult to use fax over ip networks... »www.soft-switch.org/foip.html
Some people have good luck while others do not.
Our Brother fax printer scanner combo did not work well at all but the HP Laserprinter combo we have now is closer to 80%. |

| reply to CSG Again thanks for the help!
Thanks for giving that link chpalmer, it was useful information to read.
We had a Wave Tech come out last week and helped us to solve the problem. The problem appeared to be something very simple actually. The fax is working like a charm now |

| Well when I had Quest I always had the Fax line connected to the EMTA outlet in the wall. When the Wave Tech came, he connected it to the telephony modem, as this is where it needs to be to work. I never thought to do that, because I never had a modem with Quest. So it was just a misunderstanding on my part.
I also ordered a 2nd phone line for the fax itself to make things easier too. |
