Ok guys, where do you get your pizza in CT?

Ok, we all know some of the best pizza in the world is right here in CT (well, I ain't "here" but, well, you know...) But here's the thing, where is YOUR favorite spot, and why? What toppings/style pizza do you order? How much does it usually cost?

Everyone has their favorite pizza place. Though they're usually very local. Even in the same general area, I'd be willing to bet there wouldn't be general agreement about which is the best pizza place.

i gotta go w/ Modern Pizza on State Street New Haven. Though I live in WallyWorld, and we have the most pizza joints in the universe here(some are actually really good) I still have to go with Modern.

In New Haven it's a tie for first between; Pepe's (»www.pepespizzeria.com/) a personal favorite, Sally's and Modern APizza. Every other place is distant second around here.

By the way has anyone else had really bad service in Sally's? The only two times I've been there the service has been terrible. The first time I was there about ten years ago the waitress was extremely rude and they burnt the daylights out of the pie. Spent the next ten years avoiding the place and going to Pepe's. Figured I'd give it another go about six months ago, and again the service was terrible, but this time pie was good (and not burnt).

Oh and be careful when down in the Wooster Street area, there's been a rash of car break in's down there. See this article from WTNH: »www.wtnh.com/Global/story.asp?s=7102056

If you hit Pepe's or Sally's, be sure to check out Libbys Italian Pastry Shop next door to Pepe's afterwards for pastries. They have pretty good canolies there. Also there are several other non-pizza restaurants like Consiglio's and Tony & Lucille's on Wooster ST that are excellent.

Athens Pizza in Putnam. I have driven by many times would not even think to stop. Not that there is anywhere to park. Is it that good? I just figured it for another Greek place like the others in town.

Pepe's is #1 but a rare treat at 45 minutes away. Locally in Southbury,Julios is OK but not great. Most of the pizza places around here now are greek owned and just not as good as a good old Italian pizza places.

Oh jeesh, here we go again. Another one of those i'm gonna put on 5 lbs this week trying out these places kinda thread.

Hmm.funny thing is..as much as folks are raving about pepe's above..i've never even heard of it..much less been there.

I suspect that will soon change.

Honestly, I really can't say i've found any places here in Waterbury that I'd rave about. Several are ok..a few good..
but nothing that really makes me say...WOW..#1..gotta go there.

Personally, I think that in their quest to please too wide an audience of consumers ..too many have drifted off into being exactly what a pizza place shouldn't be..places with just too many choices where they really specialize in nothing. Pizza..is a REALLY simple thing when you get down to it..and IMO..what works is keeping the establishment that way as well. New York style..over sized slices..a little too much grease dripping off the sides..you have to fold the slice up just right to kinda catch it all from dripping over the sides..crust just nicely done with that nice brownish black on the bottom.

Are we talking yet?

But wait..there is more. The open door feeling of the restaurant. You ARE there..on a mission..and it's for that slice or pie you've just been dreaming about having all the way there.

Which brings me down to slices. If you don't have any in a case on the counter..FRESHLY prepared..steaming..with a line up of customers just waiting on them..then you aren't the place I'm talking about.

After all..we all don't have time to wait on that pie to be done. There's work to be done..and it's called eating instead.

The sauce..the cheese..done just right.
Mmmm..now we are talking.

Toppings? If it's not pepperoni or sausage...or the both of them together. Why Bother? you're not the kind of pizza i'm thinking about. Or maybe even place either..because you've kind of lost sight of things along the way.
Trying to make TOO many people happy. And letting some forget what it's really all about.

Where exactly is THAT kind of place..around here?
A couple places try..one comes pretty close..but heck..I can't even tell you their name. They're just there..waiting for me to run into..to pick up a slice. Or two.
Or...maybe even three. What the heck hey? We only live once.

But, I'm still on a mission to find this place. It's somewhat elusive. And why ny city is always on the road trip calender from time to time. Because there..they seem to still understand what I'm talking about.

Pepe's..is that it? Can you tell me that's it?

If so..they can be expecting a visit..very soon.

Thanks.

Be ready to stand in line for 3 hours! They use a coal fired oven which makes them unique. The peels they use are like, Heaven's, something like 10 feet long it seems due to how deep the oven is.

The service was pleasant but the place really bustles so you have to wait quite a while for your pie, but while you wait you can look at photos of VIPs who have eaten there like recent US presidents.

The pie is partially crispy crunchy and ever so slightly burnt the nice way. The Pies come out very organically shaped and made. The atmosphere is energetic to say the least. Just a couple slices and you're quite happy but the problem is it is so good you want more!

I don't suppose, Rick, there is such a perfect place because the good places you just have to wait your turn. There IS a great place in Ithaca NY where they sell some really cool varieties of slices, and even with all the variety of types, they are exceptional. A Salvadoran fellow took over the place but he views making the pies like they always were as totally sacred so you'd swear a guy named Mario made it. You don't have to be Italian to cook Italian, you just have to respect the way.

But when we talk about Pizza and Italians, true pizza is the "Pizza Margarita" (I know my spelling is wrong here) which is quite simple. Folks in Italy feel that Americans have gone overboard with ingredients and what they prefer over there is crust, sauce, fresh/buffalo mozerrela, and some basil leaves. Only that, that's all. That is true Italian the old world way. Or at least that's what I have seen and read and been told (I have never been to Italy, but I LONG to go!!!) I wish I were a merchant of Venice to be honest...

For me, I like the toppings: Sausage, maybe pepperoni/maybe not, peppers of various types, mushrooms, and onion. I also love broccoli pizza.

Actually, there WAS a place like I'm talking about here in Ct. but for some as of yet undiscovered reason, they recently CLOSED!
And was I ever pissed off because I drove to Danbury only to find that out. Well, the trip was for a couple other things as well, but surely that was on the must stop at them agenda as well.

And honestly, I don't even know what their name was either.
Maybe brick oven pizza or something like that? Or, maybe that was what they cooked their pizza in.
Anyways..it was on newtown road in the same little plaza that Boston market is in..across from Burger King...if anyone can help me out on the name.
Or..WHY they closed..or where the heck the pizza guy went.

He was a real pro and written up many times I guess in the media.

Strange how the business just didn't make it, being so good.

Anyways..signmeuptoo..i swear..with all your recent posts about Ct..and how you want to come back..you REALLY should be on the next bus out. There's no place..like home. And it sounds like Ct. is that for you.

There is aparking lot. It's on the right side when you are facing the place.

The great thing about CT and pizza is that almost anywhere you go you'll find great pizza....there are many good places, especially in the New Haven area, besides the big three (Pepe's, Sally's and Modern). I tend to go to Modern quite a bit since I work near there and the parking is a little easier than Wooster St. (Pepes/Sally's). Still a line though.

If you go up to Hamden, there are several good places there too - Olde World on Whitney ave, for one.

Very good article from the Register on Pepe's vs Sally's.
Also,a little bit of history,Sal Consiglio(Sallys) was the nephew of Frank Pepe who split of from the family business sometime in the late 30s. Pepe's is often credited as being the birthplace of the American Pizza.

Thanks for that article. I've read another, but that article is very good. For those considering traveling from afar to try, let me tell you, it IS worth it, IMHO. I haven't been to Sally's, only Frank Pepe's, and I was a little bewildered by the wait. Though having had waited in line for two and a half hours to eat at the House of Nanking in San Fransisco, I resigned to the idea that it would be worth it. I had no idea how true that was.

The pizza arrives (finally) in an on shape, not the perfect cookie cutter versions you see from Dominoes, and trust me, the difference is so far it isn't funny. Places like Dominoes make puffy, doughy crusts of goo. A Wooster street pie is a very thin, crispy thing that is infinitely more satisfying. Sure, I won't turn down a Domino's pizza, heck, I used to work for them! But the difference is like Kindergarten and MIT if you will. Domino's isn't bad, it's just that Pepe's is that good, err, grand, if you will.

I don't know if there are any non New Englanders reading this, but if so, certainly make the trip. There is plenty to see and do in CT, MA, and RI (Southern NE).

You could spend an easy afternoon at the Wadsworth Anteneum. Visit the Peabody Museum at Yale University and marvel at dinos all day!

I used to go there on my birthday as a kid ever year, and what a thrill it was.

There is much to do, and I haven't lived in CT since I was, oh, 18 (I'm 49)!

Athens Pizza in Putnam Sorry I just found out that I had them confused with Zoe's. I have been to Athens but it was ten years ago. Maybe I will give it a try again.
