| reply to sortofageek Here's a bit of twisted irony for you all. Last week I got 'the call' right about the same time I was really beginning to dislike CC for using Sandvine packet forging. So...of course when I got the call, the got the usual run around when I'd try to pin him down as to how much bw I needed to cut to satisfy CC. Anyways...today I get this in the mail...seems all 8Mb subscribers in my area are getting the Blast! 16/2 tier upgrade for free. After reading stories of peeps getting 'the call' for 180GB a month then still being disconnected after reducing to 60 & 40GB (~87% reduction!), I was just gonna max my pipes for all they're worth then just change isps when they kicked me..after all, I'm beginning to wonder if ANYONE who gets 'the call' manages to retain their connection for long in any case. But in light of this upgrade I decided to install a BW meter and all but quit dling until I can get 'unflagged'...if that's even possible. Geez the irony...I get the call then a week later they double my connection speed for free..talk about giving someone enough rope to hang themselves..lmao. |

Comcast has revealed some details about its mysterious bandwidth limitations. Previously the company had only said that it would shut down customers who went over what the company considered average use. But given that the company doesn't seem to have a definition of average use, it's difficult to know whether you're in danger of being shutdown.

2 edits | ha ha..not my fault irony is already twisted...
@Mankind...a similar deduction was made attempted from an earlier CC quote saying what is too much with the phrase 'x number of feature movies'..but no video format is mentioned, is that dvd5, dvd9, divx (xvid), vcd...nothing. But the 'ol top .1% of bw consumers is the official rule..if there is one.
Has anyone here ever got 'the call' and managed to actually retain their connection by lowering their bw to the mythical 'acceptable' level? I get the feeling that once your flagged, you never get 'un'flagged. |

1 edit | reply to sortofageek All i know is if comcast sends me a letter then bumps me I will be the biggest thorn possible for them. Its just plain bad buisness practices. I would cancel all my services with them (about $170) and publically make it known what they do or have done to me in a local newspaper. I would also talk people away from there service. All in all thats a decent chunk of money they are loosing. |

| reply to sortofageek I've just signed on with verizon DSL, It's only 3mb download but it's better than nothing and better than getting cut off.
When my DSL is operational COMCAST goes bye bye. But that's no t the only thing going...All my digital cable goes too as I have already have an installation date for directv. I'm actually going to save about 60.00 a month on the whole shooting match since right now I'm over 170.00 a month for everything. COMCAST Sucks, I hope they enjoy loosing 170.00 a month, I've been a customer for over 5 years but I think that was 5 years too long. |

| reply to Ryan Eventually...prolly sooner rather than later, CC is gonna have to address these issues (Packet forging w/ sandvine and the invisible cap). They are on the watch list of the EFF for their anti-seeding tatics using sandvine and now various tech web sites such as AnandTech are doing write ups about the invisible bw limit and customers getting cut off. Time will tell...the ball is in their court and the ref isn't very happy. |

| reply to Ryan said by Ryan :Its just plain bad buisness practices. It's plain bad BUSINESS practice to MANAGE THEIR NETWORK THE WAY THEY SEE FIT? Why do you feel you can download as much as you feel you want for the small amount you pay? I hope Comcast gets wise and sets a 25-30 GB cap and kicks the abusers off permanently. We will all have a better experience then. -- I wasn't born with enough middle fingers. |

1 edit | Yes, when comcast decides to be the monopoly they should support the users since they suck up every other option like they did in my area. 25 gig cap give me a break you must only use your connection for web browsing.. Streaming radio and tv alone would suck that up in a month never mind having multiple users vpn connections and etc. Im not even talking p2p before that limit would be passed. Im sorry I actually use my connection how dare I use it to what its advertised. I should have known that for paying for these speeds I cant actually use them.
Small amount? I don't know how much your paying, but 170 a month in their services is not cheap by any means.
Give me a break b1gdr3 not sure what planet your on, but some people actually use their connection. For comcast to boot people instead of adding more nodes like they should be doing in congested areas is only them trying to take the easy way out.
Companies like comcast is why the US is dropping in broadband services. Their more interested in maxing their profits then infrastructure. |

| It is down where i am. It never used to be like that though. Until comcast spread its wings.
Oh also for a 25 gb cap you figure it takes about 2 hours to download 5 gb using the standard connection. That means with your great cap idea users would only be able to use their connection at max download for 10 hours a month.... Yea great idea... |

Ryan Premium join:2001-03-03 Attleboro, MA | We had 2 separate companies offering service. Comcast bought both areas from them leaving comcast as the only choice. I call that a monopoly no? |

If not, is it their fault that these other (non cable) services aren't available ? |

1 edit | reply to sortofageek Not completely their fault but they take part in it. We had time warner and at&t. At&t was bought out by comcast. There goes at&t although i understand that they had funding issues. They also decided they wanted time warners zone must have offered good enough money and there that one went. |

dogcatcher,
you are living in a world of your own, I present for you viewing pleasure:
1. dvd downloads (ala' amazon.com) 2. other online video services 3. IPTV 4. Software downloads to include .iso files (i.e. linux distributions)
the list goes on....
today I downloaded the following:
a linux distro at 4.34gb (a DVD) a trial version of office 2007 (750mb) and two movies from amazon (each around 1gb)
so what's illegal here? think before you open your mouth and accuse people of illegal activity. My comcast bandwidth usage last month (according to them) was around 450gb. Who cares? I paid for unlimited so I should get unlimited. I agree with everything you say. Those who defend Comcast do not understand the legal language. But I do want to clarify that Comcast is doing a spin job with talk of excessive use. The contract and Comcast's own advertising clearly represents a connection that is available 24 hours a day every day with a given cap on the speed.
Everybody has a bandwidth limit. It is the speed you are getting and in theory able to use for 24 hours a day over a given period such as a month. You do have a cap and you cannot exceed a cap which has been defined by your download speed.
Thus, Comcast should be careful and people should not apply the term "illegal use" to people who use their connection frequently if not almost all the time. If there are specific activities clearly stated in the contract such as prohibition of a server fine.
If Comcast were hauled into court for damages due to a terminated connection for exceeding a cap (which is impossible to exceed since you are limited by your speed), then the user could win in court with the legal argument. If there are contradictory terms in the contract, Comcast will likely lose since they are the ones with the high priced lawyers who should have written a clearer contract or put in a specific cap on data transfers which would then communicate to the user that the connection is not truly 24 hours a day. The user/customer then has a decision to make and hopefully he or she will have an alternate provider. |

1 edit | Westwood: first of all, why is someone who disagrees with your viewpoint automatically ".... defending Comcast"? Aren't people allowed to have differeing viewpoints without being called names?
Second, you need to do some additional research. What contracts? Comcast is a month-to-month service that can be cancelled at any time.
As I asked Paco earlier, please post some relatively recent advertising where Comcast offers "unlimited" usage of the service. |
