[Philly] Earthlink wi-fi Philly and wi-fi modem?

Their map says we can get service. However, my wi-fi card on the top floor doesn't detect a signal. Shouldn't it detect a signal, even if I can't connect?

What is a wi-fi modem? Earthlink wants us to rent or buy one. They stop short of saying we can't connect without one. They say our service will be vastly improved.

We have dsl. Modem and router are in basement. Works well. Earthlink promoses up to 3 mbps for $21.95. With a 6 mo intor of $9.95. Verizons' latest offer is up to 3 Mbps for $31.99. Long term financial condition of Earthlink seems to be iffy.

Any experience with Earthlink wi-fi?

Tried Earthlink wifi a couple weeks ago.Setup was easy only problem was I could not get any type of signal even though a transmitter is a block away. They sent me a wireless modem with a 12in antenna I moved that thing all over the place includind the window.Tried for 2hrs to get even a minor signal, finally called support back and made arrangements to send everything back and cancel service.

Good luck with the Earthlink in Philly...I saw a news story last nite showing how they tried to connect in various hot spots around metro philly without much luck. Hopefully someday VZ can strong arm Comcast and the city can be wired for fiber
