US is around 2.8m sq miles if alaska is excluded, France is 212K. Not exactly 30 times, more like 12x, with 5x the population. If you look at rural vs city distribution the two are similar. |

| reply to nozzer Bear in mind that a large part of the usa in virtually unhabited, like most of nevada, arizona, montana, etc. It it more meaningful to compare populations within accessible range of anything but dial-up. France also has significant areas with few people, such as the alps, by the way.
